Smith Rock Overnight, Climbing + Sun - All ages and levels

The forecast calls for sunshine! This time of year is the ideal time to enjoy Smith Rock. Although you should be prepared for cold nights. We'll make this an organized trip open for all abilities. We'll plan on climbing near the Morning Glory wall, overboard area, and Dihedrals on Saturday where there is a wide variety of climbs available for all skill levels and ages. Of course it could be crowded so we may split into two groups depending on how many want to come. The max size of this group will be 12.

Please state whether you can climb LEAD, TOP-ROPE, or are a BEGINNER. A $15 dollar group fee is required to reserve your spot and helps to ensure committed attendance and offset the work of planning the event...and being the rope-gun :). It is not refunded if you are a no-show!

The weather could change, of course, and force us to cancel. Check your email the day before you leave to the meetup location.

Attendees are responsible for their own climbing and camping gear/food. We can share ropes provided they are in good condition. Please make a note if you don't have a rope or other pertinent gear. I have extra harnesses, shoes (sizes 8 to 11), and 2 helmets.

Kids are welcome! Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash at all times.

CAMPSITE: Bivouac area

COST: $15 to reserve your spot in the group, $5 per person for campsite + suggested $28 from non-drivers to drivers for gas. We recommend each non-driving person donate 10 cents/mile to be split evenly between all drivers. For this trip, the total round trip driving distance for our drivers will be about 280 miles or $28 bucks per non-driving person.

PERMITS: State park pass required for all vehicles. This is included in your campsite fee.

CARPOOLING PLAN: Final carpooling plans will be arranged at the meetup site. We encourage folks living close to each other to carpool to the meetup site if possible.

WHAT TO BRING: Hiking/Approach shoes, sandals/Flip flops might be a good idea, plenty of water – at least 1 liter, sunscreen, lunch, backpack for your gear, sunglasses, hat or sunvisor.

Hey everyone, I will be taking the minivan. I have 6 spots available. I would like to return to Portland Sunday evening.

If we end up with all six seats filled, it'll be a tight squeeze with gear but cheaper gas. Let me know if you are interested.

Hi gang, my cell is[masked] & have tent space, but I wont be arriving until super late tonight. I have the luxury of knowing the current camp hosts, Michael & Diane Chacon (friends of my brother) so I wont get hassled for rolling in at midnight & will probably sleep in my car in their camp host space tonight :-) But you arent supposed to sleep in cars there & can get a ticket if you get caught, so I wouldnt recommend it otherwise.

Does anyone have an extra tent or room in there tent for me by any chance? Im just visiting the area so i don't have a tent with me. Thanks!

Is anyone who is driving planning on coming back Saturday evening or is everyone staying until Sunday? Thanks,

    September 26, 2013

  • David M.

I'll be driving down Friday after work, but won't be out in time to make the meet up carpool. I've only climbed outdoors on top rope so far (don't have a rope), and will be staying through Sunday.

    September 25, 2013

    • David M.

For sure, although I should note that I'll be heading back Sunday evening in chase that impacts your timing/decision.

Sounds good. Mabye we can both ride with Linda as we all want to come back Sunday evening

  • Mesha W.

I just came about this. If you are serious about postponing until Sept. 27/28 I might be able to go! I also don't work Fridays - so if anyone wanted to head over earlier on Friday I could. I'm a top roper, not a beginner, but in shape of a beginner after recovering from an injury. I'm always up for hitting up a climbing gym in Portand area as well if the weather does finally turn soggy.

Doing it next weekend would be fine with me, weather forcasted to be a lot better.

I was planning on just doing the one night and coming back Saturday evening. Sounds like everyone else is planning on going the whole weekend. I might have to make my own transportation arrangements.

Glad to hear other people would like to stay Sunday as well! I'd like to stay Sunday. If the group size remains the 6 of us, we can fit in David’s car and Matt's truck. It might be better that way, as the van is not gas efficient (about 19 mpg) so it doesn’t really pencil out in less we would ALL like to drive down together in the van and the seats are filled. I would love to take the van but sometimes it’s more convenient to have two cars in case people want to be done climbing early. It’s up to you guys!

The van will be a good option if we end up with more people coming though. Will Bill and his friend be staying until Sunday?

    September 17, 2013

  • David B.

Such a nice area-I would like to stay till Sunday afternoon too. Am willing to pick up 2-3 people in Portland and save the risk of getting your car vandalized at Park n Ride. Also, I am willing to reduce driving cost to $15/person because of the 50+ mpg my car gets. Please contact me by 9/18 to reserve a place in my vehicle.

    September 17, 2013

  • David B.

    Hi
I am trained in lead climbing, normally challenge myself at 5.9. Climb infrequently (once per month if that). Love Smith Rocks-and will be a full moon that weekend.

Can offer rides to 3 others in my little gas efficient geo metro-just let me know if you need a lift.

I would love to come! I am new to this site and new to this area, but this sounds great!

I have been hoping to find a way to get down to Smith Rocks this month. I love the area and am only able to visit a couple of times a year. As I just moved to the area this month from Washington, hopefully that will all change. I have all of my own gear (draws, anchors, rope, and personal). I have been climbing for about 4 years. I am a sport climber and have 3 years of experience leading. At the moment I am not in climbing shape unfortunately and have only been going a few times a month. I would only feel comfortable leading 5.7's or 5.8's but would love to put up ropes for people who need them in this skill level.

I also have a minivan that seats 7 if anyone would like to carpool. I live in Hillsboro.

    September 10, 2013

    • Rod M.

I'm for using your van and I'm only comfortable leading 5.7 too

Is Linda staying til Sunday if so I'll go with her, if not with Matt

      September 17, 2013

  • Bill

    Hey guys!
This sounds fun, I am looking forward to it. I am a beginning climber, pretty much exclusively climbed indoor so far. In the gym I can climb 5.8 comfortably and struggle on 5.9. I just have basic gear, my shoes and harness. I am coming with my friend Nhate. He is an experienced climber and has a full complement of gear and can lead more advanced routes. Carpooling in the minivan sounds great, we can meet wherever. Looking forward to it, thanks!
