Have you been longing to get outdoors this season, but just don't feel like you have enough experience to crush High Exposure? Have you done some gym climbing, but wondered how or when you're ever going to climb outdoors? Come join us then for a beginner-friendly outdoor climbing event. Let's go to Peter's Kill.
To be clear, this event is intended for all climbers, both new and old, advanced and novice. Peter's Kill, a "miniature Gunks," has the same rock and features, but is only one pitch high. As such, it's a great location to try top-rope climbing outdoors, the same as what we do in the gym. The climbs range in difficulty from 5.2 (much easier than the gym) to 5.13b (much harder), so there should be something for everyone.
First of all, if you've never ever tried climbing, you should probably do this in a climbing gym first. We have plenty of regular gym climbing meetups. Some people find this sport to be pretty intense. Of course, we can always lower you, if you're uncomfortable with the climb, but we want this to be a fun day for everyone.
Secondly, we're not guides. Some of us have gear and know how to use it. We've gone through the necessary training to build anchors and setup outdoor climbs. Still, we're here to have fun too. As such, don't expect a class, or a day of special guided instruction. We're not offering a free course, just the opportunity to hang out with some fun folks who want to setup and climb some top-ropes with all ability levels.
As for the climbing, please bring gear if you have it (ropes, biners, racks, etc.) You'll also, of course, be responsible for your own personal gear (shoes, harness, helmet). This gear can also be rented at Rock&Snow, which is on the way, if you need it, but the onus is on you to make the reservation. We'll also be carpooling, so if you have a car, please let us know. Everyone will be expected to chip-in for gas. If you have neither, you can still come, and you can still contribute (a suggested donation of $10-20 would really help with the fee that Meetup charges for running Vedge). Of course, we'd still have to double-check that we have sufficient gear to accommodate everyone.
Please note that there's a $10 day pass for the area with a climbing permit.
How do we meet?
We will meet at 7:00am in the Starbucks at the corner of 14th St and 6th Ave in Manhattan. There will be waivers to sign and we will double-check that everyone has the gear they need. Please be on time.
