21st Annual Tarwheel Century

"Join us for the 21th annual Tarwheel Century.  It's time to put winter aside and get back in the saddle for the 'world's flattest century'.  The Tarwheel Century will be one of the most beautiful rides you can do.  Our completely sagged century will take you through the country setting of Camden County.  If Mother Nature cooperates, there will be azaleas and dogwood trees in bloom along the attractive waterside."

http://www.rivercitycyclingclub.com/tarwheel_century.html

They have once again changed the routes so (thankfully) this year the 100 mile route DOES NOT include the Great Dismal Swamp.  (I'm pretty sure that's where my tire got shredded due to the pavement being so rutted.)

I will be making dinner reservations for everyone at Cypress Creek on Friday night.  If you DO NOT plan to join us for dinner at Cypress Creek please let me know so I can take you off of the list.  If you are bringing guest(s) please let me know how many will be with you.  http://www.cypresscreekgrill.com/menu.html

Please be advised that there is still construction going on at the only bridge that takes you out of Elizabeth City to Camden and plan accordingly.  It took us about 45 minutes to get back into Elizabeth City one evening due to traffic congestion.

LISTED BELOW ARE PLACES FOR AREA LODGING (most of us are staying at the North River Campground which has RV sites, tent sites, cabins, motel rooms and apartments):

Hi Everyone! This will be my first meetup with your group. I'm going to try and get a tent site at North River for Friday night. I'll be departing GSO in the early afternoon after work, so I should get there by evening. How can I find the group at the campground?

  • Marty L.

Does anyone know if we can pick up our packets on Friday? If so, where and what times?

    April 23

    • Patti S.

Marty, unfortunately you can't pick up your packets on Friday. Everyone has to wait until 7am on Saturday morning.

      April 23

  • Steve L.

It looks as if I will have to work Saturday, unless it rains a substantial amount between now and then. So, I have cancelled my campground reservation. If I see that it's too wet to work, I'll get a hotel reservation and come on up, but doubtful for now. Hope everyone has a great, fast ride!

      April 20

  • Patti S.

Hey all, as of today (April 6th) we are completely full for the dinner reservations on Friday night. If anyone else decides to join in on the ride after April 6th you will need to make your own arrangements for dinner. So sorry!!

Everyone is welcome to join us for dinner at the campground on Saturday night no matter when you sign up for the ride. You do not need to be staying at the campground either.

    April 6, 2014

  • Charlie

Patti one thing that I think maybe we could work on as a group before this ride is for some of the newer riders to learn to draft. As Bob S. Says, "Everybody thinks riding the flats is easy........but unless you draft it is the hardest thing around." And he is right as riding solo on flat ground can grind you down to a state of depression quite fast. ;-)

    3 · April 4, 2014

    • Patti S.

Absolutely Charlie, and I totally agree. That was one of the things that Judy Jordan always had us doing when we first started training for this century ride 2 years ago. And it really makes a difference when you're trying to put in that many miles.

      2 · April 4, 2014

  • Patti S.

Hi all, if you plan to participate in Saturday evening's dinner at the campground could you please list what you plan to bring here? That way we can all see what everyone is bringing and we won't get doubled up on sides or items. Some of you have already emailed/texted/etc to me what you are bringing, but could you please repost here? Thanks!!

I will be bringing a pasta salad and charcoal for the grills to cook the hamburgers/hotdogs with.

Judy Jordan will be bringing Macaroni and Cheese, burger size buns and a 4 pack of Veggie Burgers and onions for slicing.

    March 17, 2014

    • Patti S.

Judy, I think almost everyone is staying at the campground this year. There are possibly only 2 or 3 that aren't so that won't be a problem.

      March 20, 2014

    • Tom P.

There is a map of the entire Camp Ground on their site.

      March 22, 2014

  • Patti S.

I will post a full list of who is bringing what in a week or so. I still have a few people I haven't heard from, but it looks like it's going to be a pretty good spread Saturday night!

    March 18, 2014

  • Tom P.

Cathy also wants to make some brownies so Patti if you could you add that to the list?

    March 18, 2014

    • Patti S.

Ohhhh brownies!! We like brownies!! Ok, I've put you and Cathy down for that. And since Greg is bringing tomatoes, don't worry about bringing those.

      1 · March 18, 2014

  • Sandy S.

To All: Patti and I just agreed that Steve Lail and I are probably the worst cooks that are going to be participating so we are bringing the utensils, foil, platters, and a large veggie tray. Along with anything else that we decide we are missing once it gets closer!!

    1 · March 18, 2014

Stupid spell check ... I meant brats ... Not beauty

      1 · March 18, 2014

  • Tom P.

Patti..Cathy mentioned Baked Beans and we could bring some tomatoes for slicing. I have a ton of Charcoal and could bring a big bag too. Plus I can bring some firewood. It is very expensive and comes in little bundles. We take it with us to the mountains and could bring a good bit with us instead of paying $5 a bundle. We can bring something to cook on the grill just need to know what is needed.

    1 · March 17, 2014

    • Patti S.

Sounds great Tom. I'll let you take care of bringing the charcoal and maybe I'll bring an appetizer or two. I'll make up a completed list as the date gets closer so this won't be so confusing for everyone. And I may be able to bring some firewood also.

      January 22, 2014

    • Patti S.

Hey Steve, if you haven't already done so, you need to try and move your reservation to the North River Campground so you'll be able to hang out with the rest of us. The campground has cabins, apartments and motel rooms. Very nice place!

      March 12, 2014

  • jody

We are going to have to drop out. Too much going on to take that time away. I had reserved a cabin at the campground if anyone wants to reserve it.

Cindy O thinks that we may want to consider a Woodstock theme this year, in keeping with Tour To Tanglewood. So, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair or helmet. :)

    January 27, 2014

  • Cindy

Thanks, Patti, for taking care of the dinner reservation. Also glad to hear they changed the route. Going through the swamp path was not fun. So looking forward to this trip. Will be fun to hang out with everyone before and after the ride.

No rooms at the inn (campground). We stayed at the Fairfield inn with a special rate last year. If I can get training I plan in going and would live a roomie and to carpool.

We just reserved a cabin but won't know if we can actually make it until the date gets closer.

I don't guess anybody in our group stayed in one of the motel rooms..so it would be a good idea to call them and see which has more room

      January 8, 2014

    • Sandy S.

They have pictures on there website and it looks like the motel rooms might be just a tad bigger.

    2 · January 4, 2014

I got this info from the posting of last year's ride..Several stayed at the Hampton Inn, and they did have discounted rates for those doing the ride. So, if you cannot get a room at the campground, here is another option.

And I got the last room.

      January 3, 2014

I just called the campground and was informed that there is only 1 cabin left with twin beds for $79 a night. They also have hotel rooms attached to the main office for $49 @ night and I booked one of those for me and Steve. Please make your reservation if you haven't done so, so we can all hang out together. If you decide not to go, you only have to inform them 3 days in advance.
[masked] phone number to campground and Patti has posted the link below.

Got the last twin bed cabin!!

      1 · January 3, 2014

    • Patti S.

As the date gets closer some people may need to back out of the ride. If you have a reservation already and then realize you won't be able to attend, please post it here before you cancel your reservation. It could be that we may have someone wanting a cabin that couldn't get one and we can just switch the reservation over to them. But hopefully no one will back out...gonna be a great group at the campground!!

Im out, gonna support tvilles local triatholon that goes to an awesome cause! Its same day.

    November 21, 2013

  • Jean S.

That is a yes for now. Looks interesting and of course camping is always fun. How far in advance to you need to book tent site?

    November 11, 2013

    • Patti S.

I would book at least a couple of months in advance because alot of the riders from the Tarwheel Century stay there. You can cancel up to 3 days before the date with no cancellation fee, and they won't charge your credit card until your camping date.

      November 11, 2013

  • Patti S.

    Hi All,

I have spoken with the North River Campground and given them a heads up that we're coming back again in 2014. For those of you that want to stay at the campground, when you call and make your reservation please make sure you tell whoever you talk to that there is a folder in the group section under the name "Clip In and Ride". That way the campground can keep us closer together and keep all of our information together.
