Introduction to Overtone with Philip Potter

Attention: We're changing our program! To all who wanted to learn about Cascalog: the talk is re-scheduled for our March meetup!

Phil Potter is in Berlin for a couple of weeks and we're excited, that he agreed to introduce us to Overtone!

"Overtone is a realtime audio programming environment for Clojure. It provides a truly open-ended facility to create music, and is particularly amenable to live coding and performance. In this talk, Philip will introduce Overtone with code samples showing examples of additive and subtractive synthesis, sequencing and scheduling, and interfacing with external devices. We will also hopefully demonstrate that using Clojure for this allows the creation of reusable, sharable abstractions and encourage collaboration in music-making."

So, let's prepare our machines and make some noise!

It has been super interesting to see some of the possibilities provided by overtone. I feel motivated again to set it up and play with it.

For preparations: you may wish to clone the repo we're going to work from and run lein deps: https://github.com/philandstuff/...

That is all that is required for OS X users. Linux users will also want to install the Jack audio daemon, see instructions here: https://github.com/overtone/over...

I come from academic background. I have no experience with Hadoop or Pig; I have read about MapReduce but haven't used it in practice.

I still have no experience in Clojure (just read a book about it) but I want to learn as much as I can. The topics MapReduce, Pig and so on sounds interesting.

I'm preparing an introduction to Cascalog and I'm curious: Who of you already have some experience with Hadoop, MapReduce, Pig and the likes?
