Kayak and camp on the New River Gorge National River, WV

  • We will be Kayaking the New river from Sandstone Falls near Sandstone WV to McKendree WV. This section of river has class I,II and III Rapids. Long rapids and long flatpools. The rapids have large waves, stoppers, hydraulics and holes. This is about a 16-17 mile section. I plan on traveling back up river to Sandstone falls for the put in leaving most everyones vehicles near our Friday night camp site for easy exit Sunday afternoon. Plan on packing your Kayak with your camping gear as we will be camping on the river Saturday night. It is recommended that you have a skirt or at a minimum a half skirt for your kayak.
  • This is not a commercial raft trip. You must have your own boat, PFD, camping gear, cloths, food, etc.
  •  We will meet Friday Night Grandview Sandbar - Located on Glade Creek Road, off Route 41 near Prince. Coming from Beckley, it is a well-marked right hand turn before crossing the New River.  With Four walk-in and twelve vehicle sites. Lynn is going to head out early Friday and hold us some sites. It is primitive camping first come.
  • Please email me direct with cell number and verify that you are coming no later than Wednesday July 6th at 6 pm [masked]  or you can call me at [masked]
  • I would like to car pool with someone  as my wife will be driving separately and traveling on West after this adventure.
  • Please plan on donating to the shuttle vehicles, we will work this out Saturday morning which of our cars will work best. I have not hired a shuttle service at this time. Depending on the final commiment Wednesday this might be an option.
  • If by chance when Lynn gets there and the camp site is full there are a couple of other sites near by. I'll call you Friday night on our way out with direction if needed.
  • If you happen to be coming out Saturday morning plan on being at the camp site by 9 am and again please let me know this.
  • Looking forward to a great weekend....   Mark

    Marsha: Thanks!
I'm sure someone can help you with hot water. I've got my stove and I'll bring an extra canister just in case.

Having said that, I am taking my wife in a recreational kayak with a nylon skirt. Since the weather should be pretty warm, taking an unexpected swim shouldn't be too much of a downer. It will be critical to have EVERYTHING in dry bags.

Guys, a word of caution, class III rapids are no joke. The hardest rapids on the Upper James through Richmond are Choo Choo & Michael's Gut (class II). The Lower James through Richmond has Hollywood (III+) and Pipeline (III). Having said that, what one person calls a class III can very greatly from another. For example, Roger Corbett's book on Virginia Whitewater has known over-rated rapids because it was written from the perspective of an open canoe.

I have a minivan that once shuttled 8 backpackers with all their gear, so I am willing to drive/shuttle. I'm not sure how many kayaks I can fit and I presently move my kayak inside the van. While I've done a lot of hiking/backpacking/primitive camping, I'm still new to Kayaking. I can handle class 1-3 but am still lacking some gear. I would need to borrow a helmet.

    Mark,
    Thanks for organizing this trip.
I'm trying to find this section on a map.
On this one it looks like we are traveling from mile marker 10 to 25

Also, would this be the Sandstone to McCreery route here?
