Gaming AWS with Docker : 70% Cost Reduction With 2x More Scale

Hi All,

I'm thrilled to announce our fifth meetup! Avi Cavale is going to talk about how using Docker containers has helped Shippable reduce cost of operations on Amazon EC2 by ~70%. We also have a lightning talk about latest SkyBase developments @ Lithium.

Our sponsors will provide food, beer, mixed drinks, schwag and projector. You bring the hard questions.

The meetup will be happening at 6:30PM on Tuesday, July 22nd. Here's what we have planned:

Agenda:

6:30 - 7:00 -- Doors open/ general socializing & food
7:00 - 7:15 -- Introductions & announcements
7:15 - 8:00 -- Main Presentation - Avi Cavale
8:00 - 8:15 -- Q&A
8:15 - 8:30 -- Skybase update
8:30 - 9:30 -- General socializing

Main Presentation Abstract:

Hosting costs are an area of major concern for most SaaS companies. These costs drive many important decisions around scale, pricing, and feasibility of a freemium business model. Running our service on Docker containers has helped us at Shippable reduce cost of operations on Amazon EC2 by ~70%, while also reducing deployment time. Shippable's software development workflow has become more efficient as a result and we can deploy service updates to production several times a day. Best of all, we can pass these savings on to our users. Avi Cavale will share our learnings and tips on how to 'containerize your hypervisors.

About the Presenter:

Avi Cavale is the CEO of Shippable, a continuous delivery platform built on Docker. Previously, Avi spent over a decade at Microsoft building highly scalable internet services and working on products like Xbox 360, Office365, Azure, and Kinect. His most recent role was as Director of Product Development at a Seattle startup. Avi has been a speaker at many conferences like Gluecon, Red Hat Summit and also several Meetups. In his free time, he likes perfecting his bird photography and chilling with scotch, his poison of choice.
