Hello Code for Philly,
Many of you may be interested in a hackathon/unconference Azavea is organizing in a few weeks.
From June 20-22, Azavea is organizing EcoCamp, a series of workshops, a hackathon, and an unconference promoting sustainability and the environment through technology.
We hope you can join us! All you have to do is register, decide if you want a limited-edition otter-backed EcoCamp t-shirt, and bring your ideas, skills, and interest in the environment. Did we mention we’ll feed you delicious food for three straight days?
What is EcoCamp? This isn’t just a hackathon! First, it’s a full day of educational workshops on Friday. Instructors from the US Forest Service, Philadelphia Water Department, Azavea, and other organizations will lead workshops on Arduino sensors, urban forestry, mapping, green infrastructure, data visualization, etc. Then, on Saturday through Sunday, you can either apply what you learned on Friday and join up with a hackathon team tackling an environmental challenge, or learn more from your fellow attendees and share your own ideas at the unconference. Or both!
Philadelphia is a vibrant place for civic hacking as well as a hub for powerful environmental initiatives. From the Philadelphia Water Department’s world-leading work on green stormwater management and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Plant One Million trees initiative, to Code for Philly’s weekly civic hack nights and local government support for open data, civic support for sustainability is thriving in Philly.
