Participated with Baltimore group attempting to form co-housing community for three years until it folded a year ago. Attended national conference in DC in 2011; visited half-dozen Mid-Atlantic co-housing groups on various tours.
Have lived in shared houses (not co-housing) most years since 1973 in New Haven, CT; suburban Boston (Natick), MA; suburban Wash DC (Silver Spring, MD). Helped create all of these.
By now I need at least 650 sq ft, more than one room, but unless cottage, not whole house. Because of orthopedic problems (joints done in by jogging and swimming and gym and likely bad genes and bad meds) need to move from split-level to single first floor space (w attic or basement for storage). Dog needs fenced yard. I would like to share at least 2-3 meals/wk and daily spirited (or quiet) conversation. Have extensive gardening/handyman skills/experience (but some problems doing now). Used to take other people's kids backpacking; would like to interact with kids in other ways (science/environment). Love old Victorians but can't do stairs; prefer detached/semi-detached; more interested in people than building/town structure but realize latter impacts interactions among people.
Retired scientist/journalist; decades living in shared housing; relocating to find both good housing situation and new volunteer options. Love gardening, nature, spirited discussions. Have dog who loves chasing balls.
