Hi,

What are the directions (from Denver) to the meeting spot?  I have no idea where NCAR Boulder is!

Thanks,

Andrea

Subject: [newintown-1025] New Meetup: Boulder hike up dog friendly and nearby Mt. Bear

Announcing a new Meetup for Colorado Dog Friends Adventure Group!

What: Boulder hike up dog friendly and nearby Mt. Bear

When: Saturday, September 11,[masked]:00 AM

Price: $2.00 per person

Where: NCAR Boulder

Thanks James!

Dog hike: NCAR to Bear Peak

1. When: Next Saturday, September 11, meeting at 8:45am, departing promptly at 9:00am.
2. Where: NCAR, at the entrance sign to the trails just beyond the west end of the parking lot.
3. What: Hike from NCAR west downhill for awhile, then turn south on Mesa trail and continue until Mesa trail intersects Fern Canyon trail. Ascend west up Fern Canyon to the saddle between Bear Peak and Nebelhorn, then finish off by ascending Bear.

Details:
--Total elevation gain is about 2, 500 feet, measuring from the low point behind the NCAR bluff

--The grade is gentle until Fern Canyon, where things turn quite steep. Starting at 6, 750 feet, the slope up Fern switchbacks almost the entire way, gaining 1, 750 feet in a little over a 1/2 mile. The upside is that the trail is pretty well shaded by trees, making things easier on us and our furry friends. The last bit, up to the peak, is also pretty steep.

--You will need to bring plenty of water for yourself and your dog(s) and something to snack on.

--It is possible to turn back anytime, but a common turnaround point is the saddle below Bear Peak.

--The usual hiking risks apply: heat, exertion, wild animals. Boulder has seen an increase in heat-related pet emergencies in open space--please make sure your pet is up to this hike and that you bring adequate water. (Side Note...I have a swamp cooler vest for my boy to help cool him) Please also bring poop bags and clean up after your pet.

I ask for a small donation of $2.00 cash per person to cover the cost of meetup. Thanks!

See you there! smile
