CONFIRMED ATTENDEES: Check in for carpooling / food sharing coordination on the message board here.
August 10 & 11 is our 2-day, 1-night special event to celebrate our 3rd Anniversary as a group: a hiking, eating, playing, relaxing campout under the stars to watch a meteor shower, all with our dogs right beside us. This will be a car-camping trip so you can bring the heaviest gear you own to camp in luxury, but there are no formal campsites, no restrooms, no electricity, and no water. This trip is limited to about 15 people (give or take, depending on carpooling/tent sharing situation). Basic details and answers to your questions are below.
Sign up on the waiting list only if you will definitely attend. Members who have hiked with the group at least twice and who have no prior "No-Show" status will be moved to the attending list in the order you have signed up, until the trip is full.
Holding on to a spot and dropping at the last minute deprives other dogs and people of an opportunity, and is not tolerated. Consequences of being a no-show include public humiliation and/or removal from the group. By signing up, you are ensuring: 1) your dog is current on all vaccinations; 2) you read event description completely, you acknowledge and accept all risk associated with the event and the terms of the group's Liability Release; 3) you will attend, or will update RSVP at least 7 DAYS PRIOR if your plans change.
Standard Group Rules & Limitations
All events are attend-at-your-own-risk. You must have completed at least 2 hikes with this group to attend, no exceptions. It is a ~1.5 hour drive from the metro area to where we'll camp (past Kenosha Pass). A higher-clearance vehicle may be necessary to get to our campsites, but 4WD will not be necessary. The campsite terrain is grassy rolling hills with aspen trees.
A tentative / basic schedule is as follows:
- Saturday August 10:
Late morning: arrive at camp, set up tents, etc
Early afternoon: offleash hike (optional)
Evening: Potluck dinner, campfire (as permitted), stargazing, etc. The Perseid Meteors will streak fast and bright across the sky from late night to early morning (visibility depending on cloud cover of course). Best viewing is after midnight.
- Sunday August 11:
Morning: Potluck breakfast
Late morning: Pack up & head out for another hike (optional).
Return to the metro area in the late afternoon / early evening.
Water: NONE AT CAMP. Bring a MINIMUM of 2 gallons of drinking water per person and 2 gallons per dog. DO NOT SKIMP ON WATER. Since we're car-camping, bring more water if you can.
Leash Law: Offleash ok if under voice control in Pike National Forest. See Group Rules for more regarding Voice Control. Please do not let your dog be a nuisance at camp. Also be aware other wildlife including coyotes, skunks, etc inhabit the area so watch/leash your dog accordingly. If we hike into a Wilderness area, leashes will be required and max. hiking group size may be limited.
