Spring Field Training Exercise (FTX)

Please note the date change

As the original dates fell on Father's Day weekend, we are moving the date, and setting location to coincide with the PPRAA Amateur Radio Field Day.

This will be our first FTX.

Training topics are as follows:
Land navigation/map/compass (more information coming on maps needed for the area, a good compass is required)
GPS (a handheld GPS is not required, we will have a limited number of loaners available, but we highly recommend you bring one.  Email me if you need help selecting a good starter unit.)
Field Sanitation (Both training and practice  :-)
Wilderness medical (Our Feb May 26 training is on Medical Trauma.  We will build on that knowledge with more hand's on field training)
Basic Firearm Marksmanship is possible, more information to follow.  If possible, it will likely be limited to 22 lr.

I have coordinated with the land owner to have us put in a corner away from the main Field Day event.  We will likely have 2-3 large campers we can create a horse-shoe base camp to provide some privacy.  Anticipate doing a site visit before the next training date of May 26th and should have more information then.

This is a weekend event that is a perfect opportunity to learn and try out your radio, and learn more than you ever wanted to know about antennas. I will be there with a huge camper, with lots of room for those who want to stay for the overnight DX work on Sat night. Talk In frequency is 146.580. The location is out East near Calhan, and lots of events, seminars, and vendors going on. Even if you're not a HAM (yet) it's a great event to lean more about the capabilities of Amateur Radio...a potentially important skill for independent living.
Hope to see you there!
We will still have the training session Sunday evening at the normal time and place.

Anybody know the status of the exercise this weekend? Is it still on or has our location been affected by the fire?

I'm bringing a good sized tent. If any other female vets want to share, let me know!

The HAM Field Day property is 40 acres out south of Calhan, so there is plenty of room.
I mentioned to him our possible move of FTX weekend to the Field Day weekend and he said he could easily accommodate us. When I mentioned the concern that as a "prepper group" we wanted to be "away from the crowd" he said that would not be an issue. He offered to set us up off in an area on our own away from the main group, thereby allowing us to be somewhat independent from the Field Day, able to conduct our own training, and also be close enough to participate in Field Day as needed.
We will likely have 2-3 large RV's in a horseshoe shape to make our Base Camp location, and there will be plenty of room for tents and other RV's. There is a possibility we will be able to shoot some, and if that becomes an option, we will likely add marksmanship and firearm safety to our training list.

Ok comrades, we have a group vote once again...

We have our first FTX scheduled for June 15-16. I have been informed I completely neglected to notice that weekend is Father's Day, possibly impacting many members from their attendance.

Additionally, we have tentatively on our schedule the Amateur Radio Field Day the following weekend, June 22-23 in Calhan.

    My question is this:

Should we move our FTX to the Amateur Radio field day?

There is plenty of camping space at the Field Day location, we can still perform a variety of training along with radio usage, some BBQ, and getting to know everyone.

Please let me know your thoughts soonest, I will make a decision based on the group's input by this Sunday, and announce it at our Home Security Training. Those attending the training will have an option to vote at the meeting.

    Thanks!

I'm tentative as well but at about 80% for attending. I have a trip during the previous week that is still somewhat fluid.

What are the desired attributes for location? I may be able to provide some ideas. Additionally, was the intent for this FTX to involve an overnight in the field?
