CUPS Meeting Tues February 18th at 6:30 for socializing and 7pm for the presentation at the Downtown Aquarium. Park across the street in their lot and save stub for validation at the bar.
The Calendar Lake and Mt Kilimanjaro - Adventures in East AfricaDuring the summer of 2013 Paddy Ryan and Laura Hix headed to Africa to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. Blissfully unaware of the expense and difficulty in traveling around this vast region they also decided to dive in Lake Malawi. Lake Malawi has as many fish species as the Caribbean - most of them cichlids. For a biologist this represents an amazing example of explosive adaptive radiation and is a case study for most Evolution courses.
Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, and at 19340 feet represents quite a challenge. It isn't a climb but more of a hike and it tests you both physically and emotionally. Paddy and Laura took no underwater photographs on Mt Kilimanjaro ...
About Paddy Ryan: Paddy was born In England and has lived in Jersey in the Channel Islands, Fiji, New Zealand, Sarawak, Australia and the US. He has a doctorate in zoology and is formerly taught at Johnson & Wales University in Denver. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Colorado School of Mines. He is a keen, widely published, nature photographer who has written a number of books including the Snorkeller’s Guide to the Coral Reef, Fiordland Underwater - New Zealand’s Hidden Wilderness, Fiji’s Natural Heritage and most recently Kri Eco - Raja Ampat. He has been diving for 30+ years and taking underwater photographs for nearly all of that time. He’s a PADI dive master with well over 1000 dives to his credit.
Request for Feedback Needed for our next Meeting (important that you respond).
Please respond if you would be interested in having our March or April meeting at Reed Photo.
The purpose in such a meeting would be for CUPS members to discover more about displaying their pictures. It happens that many photographers have extensive photo libraries in their computers, where they are seldom seen. Personally Nick Ferris has for years framed prints with matting, glass, hooks, wire, etc. in the customary way. Which he does not like. At Reed Photo there are on display quite a few nature/wildlife pictures that have a protective finish, no glass (so no glare), no frame, and no matte. Nick thought it would be of interest for members to find out more: sizes available (no limit), finishes, costs, mounting devices, and certain 3D effects that can be created. We would need a good attendance for Reed Photo to have a member for us after hours. Please email Sonia
The first thing Reed's is concerned with is CUPS participation. Gary Reed used to attend some our meetings a few years back and noticed that attendance was quite variable. Before agreeing to a meeting date we need to find out whether CUPS members would attend and report to Reed what might reasonably be expected. Nick will bring a couple of my pictures of the sort described above to illustrate at the February meeting.
Please email Sonia [masked] if you can attend a meeting at their location 888 Federal Blvd (just not of Federal and Sixth Ave) on March 18 or April 16 at 630 pm arrival with tour at 700 pm.
