Fly Fish/Hike in Glenwood Springs (2 night trip)

  • September 27, 2013 · 7:00 AM

Great chance to get to the West slopes for some fun! This is the beautiful drive over Independence pass last opening days to allow this access to the Aspen Valley!

This is my favorite trip for Colorado road beauty and Aspens. Drive time 3hrs 30 min (plus stops)each way for this trip. Planning 2 stops..Buena Vista 30 min or so and Aspen 1 Hr.

The accommodation choices are for Two nights camping $10.00 ea or pick a nice hotel in Glenwood area. Hotel Colorado is great! Flexible activity schedule will allow 2 full days of variety of hiking, fishing, and of course soaking in the Glenwood Hot mineral springs pool! We do 2 events per day. One early one late...ending in time for 2 great Glenwood Springs Dinners together and a soak and walk by the rivers.

I will post the possible hikes (Maroon Belles and Hanging Lake are good) ck them out if you don't know them!
more on planning...need 2 hike leaders to step up for the hikers.
I will be doing the fly fishing trips .Anyone needing fishing help can count on my help! I will give casting lessons to anyone Wednesday prior to the trip. I can help with equipment too. Guaranteed good fishing and a good time. You will need a Co state fishing License.

Trip limit will be 20 total... up to 6 fishermen per fishing per trip (2 trips per day) and 2 4 hr hikes per day. I will add the hike links in a few days. All hikes are 2 to 4 hours out and back with 500 to 800 vertical typical. More difficult trails are there too.

Plenty to do if you just want to walk and take in the town. Try cking out Utube for videos on Independence Pass to give you some help on this trip. For me it's a no brainer. I will have hike captains and car driver info and more details if this materializes. SO much to do in this area. It's my old home town in the 90's.

What a fun trip with 2 great experienced outdoor enthusiasts. I have some great pics by all that I will post as soon as my computer will let me....charger problems.

Other than the drive Friday the weather was perfect with perfect fall colors. Many good meals, good times fishing, soaking in the hot springs along the crystal river, and generally doing what the group had time for and voted to do. Paula had a bum foot so we backed off the serious hikes this time a bit.
We had several good casting sessions and everyone improved on this fun sport. We fished the Roaring Fork, Crystal, Frying pan , and Colorado rivers that produced 16 or so fish for Mike and I. No bragging rights on how big they were! lol
Next time I think we could catch them FROM the hot tub by the stream!

I will be returning to this area in November for a fishing/hiking trip again. Thanks to both of you who joined me.

Greg, I want to thank you for the fly fishing lessons. I have been fishing since I was 5 years old. New to fly fishing . With your expert lessons and patience I now have the confidence to leave the spin rod home. You should charge people as a professional fly fishing guide. THANKS AGAIN. If you don't attend these trips it's your LOSS . The food at hidden and off the grid places was great. The natural hot spring on the crystal river was fantastic. AKA " THE HIPPIE dip" . THANKS AGAIN for a fantastic ADVENTURE.

My pleasure Michael...good to meet another Irishman that loves the outdoors. This area is rich in good times and good fishing. Just not enough time to see it all in 3 days! I will be going back for a winter snowmobile and snowshoe trip. I will also post a Feb or March 3 night ski trip..so start the exercises!

Enjoyed getting to know more members of the group, revisited lots of old stomping grounds, really missed going to the hot springs. Greg implied it's a group deal need to follow the group, so went along. Took lots of photos, also an opportunity in which I taught the guys about using cameras, having been a professional photographer over 20 years .

Reservations are showing closed, but with a lower member turnout I would open this trip to any members or guests who wants to join us in the morning. Just call the hotel Silver Spruce at 2 pm and secure the room.
We will hike Maroon Belles Friday at 1 pm.
If anyone has questions on the trip call me at[masked]-7913.
The weather looks great for fall hiking and fishing!

We will depart Friday 7 am from Safeway in Colorado city for those wanting to hike Maroon Belles Friday afternoon. For those working who want to join us for a one night stay and hike and bike Glenwood …. For you one nighters.....A second group will leave from the same location on Saturday at 7 am. Carpooling agreements will be arranged by me with the participants prior to departure time to split gas. My Surburban can carry 4. Gas with carpooling should be about $ 25 each max. Just pay the driver. We will meet at noon Saturday at the Hotel Colorado lobby.

Again .....The Hideout campsite is great one and only $ 10.00 per tent and is only 5 min from the hotels so we all can eat bfst together to get going. Plan on evening soaks in the Hot Springs pool.

    More information on the trip.......

I have several emails with interest for this trip, but no sign ups yet. IF your going be sure to RSVP so I have a head count.

Several Hikes are available within the Glenwood area. My favorite is Hanging lakes. This is a short but beautiful hike and a good one to consider as a must do on Saturday for the hikers going. It is detailed, as are other hikes, in the attached URL.

For bikers..bring your bikes! Several great trails follow the Roaring fork river for 46 miles downhill from Glenwood to Aspen. Yes it is an amazing 46 miles in about 4 hours..withh little or at the most easy peddling! The second is a 18 mile trail and 1% to 2% slope up the Colorado river into the Glenwood canyon. The down hilll ride back through the canyon into Glenwood is a thing of beauty. Greg

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
