Re: [witches-1258] Moms -- this is NOT a hoax! Serious info from the CDC about toxins in baby formula

What's really disturbing is that this isn't surprising in the slightest to birth and postpartum professionals (at least those of us crunchy-doula-or-childbirth-educator types).? Since I became a doula, I've seen at least 2-3 warnings of toxins found in infant formula.? I think melamine was the last one, before this one, that was found to be present in infant formula.?
?
One thing always comes to mind that makes me worry but also wonder when I read?such findings.? How much of these chemicals and other toxic substances are now found in the mother's milk of women in the United States today?? Are we giving these things to our children regardless of infant feeding practices because of the level of industrial chemicals found in our people today?? How do we avoid these things in general?? If the perchlorates are found in drinking water, would drinking filtered water help or would we need to buy bottled water?? How do we then avoid the dangers of plastics?? Would using only glass and certain metal food wares avoid other toxicants?? Eating organic and breastfeeding would certainly help avoid a lot of things that are pretty bad for you and your kids, but most parents can't really afford to go 100% organic.? It's certainly an interesting dilemma, the toxic state of much in our lives.? What kind of reasonable actions can parents and citizens do to help such things?
?
I don't think that enough U.S. women get support for breastfeeding as it is.? Women regularly get harrassed at restaurants and public places for breastfeeding, it's notoriously difficult to get a good place to pump and?the time needed to pump at most workplaces, our government doesn't provide women with the right to take paid leave from work long enough to even get breastfeeding started right, many people still think of breastfeeding as sexual and gross, and many of our mothers were taught that breastfeeding in simply not adequate and thus teach us the same things.? The first line of defense for many moms who are having breastfeeding problems is formula, not support.? Women are bombarded with formula advertisements and coupons before and after birth, given formula from the hospitals themselves, and are repeatedly told about how acceptable it is to formula-feed.?
?
The information on breastfeeding's benefits are certainly public knowledge right now, but with all the advertising done toward formula, it's no wonder that the vast majority of moms do not follow the medical recommendations for breastfeeding.? They have the formula, they have the coupons, they have the support of media and hospitals and (sometimes) friends and parents and grandparents, they often lack the support of breastfeeding mothers and professionals.? It's just so easy to take the bait.?
?
Hmm... that turned into a bit of a rant...? oh well!
?
Take care!

Wow. Thank you for sharing this devastating news that we all need to be aware of. It's yet another reason why women need to be supported in breastfeeding their babies for as long as they are able and wanting to. Mother's milk is a gift from the Goddess and it's sad that our society over-sexualizes and diminishes women's bodies to the point where there's such a strong negative connotation to breastfeeding and the message to women that their bodies aren't really capable of supporting and nurturing their children. By reaching out to an amazing network of support I've been able to nurse my twins for 16 1/2 months with minimal supplementing, something I wasn't able to do with my older daughter. This article makes me worried about not only the world they will inherit but the health problems and birth defects we pass on through abuse of Mother Earth.

I send out energies of healing and cleansing to all families affected by the toxins.
