Monarch Crest Trail

Carpooling from Red Rock Canyon parking lot, see map below.  We are loading up and LEAVING by 6am so be there on time!

We will need to arrange shuttle or take enough cars to do it ourselves.

Advanced ride for this club, high elevation and exposure add elements of difficulty not found at lower elevations.

Make sure you bring plenty of water and energy foods. 2 tubes, a patch kit, and a pump. Tool kit and a few chain links.  Protection from nasty weather if it occurs. Sunblock. First Aid Kit. Anything else you would take on a long and remote bike ride.

We have decided to carpool down so passengers will pay for gas so the drivers do not have to buy gas at all.  This will come to around $30 dollars a person so bring cash for this expense for your driver.

As it stands now:
Mike Lesser - 4bikes - top
Jordan - 4 bikes - top
Damon - 4 bikes top.
Bill Doty - 4 bikes to top
John Standish - vehicle at base to shuttle 4 drivers back to top post ride.
I will leave this ride at 16 max rsvp'd riders.

Here is the map of what CSMBC did last year:  http://connect.garmin.com/activity/113842422

Remember this is a remote ride. We all need to be prepared to fix our bikes and deal with minor injuries if the need arises.

A lesson in bicycle mechanics: it took a week and having to replace my rear derailleur cable and housing before my shifters were working properly again! Still worth it, though!

Bottom bracket bearings, still cleaning the crevasses and tight spaces, and cable and housing. I promised my Pivot no more mudfests for a long time!

I think the killer was the 12-mile stretch down the dirt road from Marshall Pass. I don't know what they put into the road base, but I'm sure concrete would have had a less disastrous effect!

It was great to ride with and meet you all. Sorry especially to the first-timers about the 50 foot views, but I still had a great time.

Happy to join you again on a future ride (or a future version of this one)!

Biking with this group is always good! The trail was damp but an outstanding experience, I'd do it again!

Great ride, a little moist, but a great ride none the less. I have posted a bunch of photos of the "Monarch Crest Assault Team".

Just a heads up, high probability we will get wet tomorrow at some point. Bring your raingear and layers. could be cold (low 40's are common, especially if rainy! Be prepared for cold temps/wet conditions consistent with high altitude thunderstorms!

Just a quick confirmation. I'll be there. Will try to be there a little earlier, actually. Dark Grey Subaru Outback. I suspect the lot will be fairly empty! Looking forward to this ride!

This is such a fun ride! Might still be a little early for an accurate forecast, but it looks like it'll be nice and cool. High in Poncha Springs is expected to be 71°. So at 9 AM--about when we'll be starting to ride--it's likely to be 50° or so THERE. 3,000 feet higher (where we'll be) it'll be around 15° cooler, so we may want to bring clothing designed to keep us a LITTLE warm! :-)

    July 25, 2013

    • Brian K.

And hopefully cool doesn't equate to wet!

    • John S.

Yeah, I hear ya. We're starting off early enough that I think we'll be ok. The area is pretty consistent with rain/thunderstorms kicking in only by mid-afternoon. (Those could be famous last words, of course.)

Getting very excited for this ride. Meet at Red Rocks right off HWY24?

    July 26, 2013

  • John S.

    Hey Brian,

Looking forward to the ride Sunday! Because I'll be driving up from Crestone, I plan to be at our Poncha Springs shuttle destination at 8 AM. Does that sound about right? And to recap, I think you mentioned parking at a lot opposite the north intersection of Highway 285 and 50. Yes?

    July 25, 2013

    • John S.

Got ya. Will see you there. Will plan on 8-ish, then, meaning I might be there as late as 8:15. Let me know if you have an ETA update.

Happy to bring up the rear on this one.

    July 5, 2013

    • John S.

Ha! We DO start pretty high taking off from Monarch Pass at 11,300 feet. Then the first thing we do is climb to nearly 12,000 feet. Not terribly steep, but a couple pretty intense climbs which feel all the more intense at that altitude!

      July 9, 2013

    • John S.

Then it's a really fun, rolling traverse on the crest of the Continental Divide and some fun downhill before climbing again for what seems like a really long time before a long downhill on a whoop-de-doo dirt road to Marshall Pass. Then MORE single-track uphill, downhill, then REALLY uphill on the Colorado Trail until the SERIOUSLY BIG-ASS DOWNHILL that goes forever on Silver Creek Trail. The last 9 miles before connecting with 285 for the last 5 or so mile road ride back down to Poncha Springs can be mostly downhill on the 4-wheel drive road, or for those who still have energy, on a really fun but VERY up and down section of the Rainbow Trail. It IS a great epic ride, about 35 miles worth. I think it involves about 2,000 feet of climbing if you do the Rainbow Trail at the end.

      July 9, 2013

  • Bryan B.

thanks mike. cant wait. there is climbing and the altitude will get you. beautiful ride.
