Their post below:

Each year I do one or two extended backpacks and this is one that I have been researching a couple years.  It is one of the must do backpacking trips in Colorado.  It is roughly 38 miles with elevations to 12,500 feet.

The awesome part of this trip is you take the Durango to Silverton train to the Elk Creek trailhead.   You then make the 38 mile loop and time the end of your trip to catch the train heading back to Durango.  You simply wave down the train and they pick you up.

This is a challenging hike and requires some experience in backpacking along with a good fitness level.

Plans are to drive to Durango, spend one night in a hotel or hostel.  Catch the train the following morning and be hikng by noon.  Spend the next 5 days backpacking through the Chicago Basin area.   After day 5, will meet the train and arrive back in Durango late that eve.  Would spend the night in a hotel, then head back to OKC the following day.

I realize this trip is 7 months away but this gives a person time to start honing their skills in backpacking along with training for the hike.

If interested in the hike, plese shoot me an email.  I want to keep the group to 5 or 6 and we will be hiking/training together to prepare for the trip.

As an option for  people that might want to ride the train from Durango to Silverton and not do any backpacking this is a perfect time to discuss.  Another option would be to shorten your backpacking trip to 1-2 days instead of 5.

Colorado has a lot of Fires right now - The area you're going to right now is not affected but beware of your roads as well... this link is the best I know of as far as fire status and areas affected.

http://www.inciweb.org/ you should check it before you head west.... just an FYI

Ryan, Ray, Kathleen....Not sure my emails are making it to you....have not heard from you and really need to firm up on core group by late Monday. Please contact me if you are wanting to. After Monday I will open up the slots to others. A trip such as this requires considerable planning and training to make it an enjoyable experience. Trying my best to firm up the group and to get the detail trip information out to the group early so they can plan their pack weight, tailor their training, etc.....

    Hope to hear from you.

NOTE: IF YOU RSVP TO A TRIP and fail to communicate with the event organizer when requested... this violates my only rule - RESPECT - Please understand I have Banned members for being disrespectful.. by RSVPing and not responding - you are taking up spots OTHER MEMBERS may have been able to take... DO NOT RSVP to thing you are not going to go on....
This was explained in detail on the letter I sent every member when I approved their belonging to the group...

      Hey Jeff,
Yes, please send me whatever you have. I would like to check it out. I have never planned any kind of outing on Meetup, not sure how it all works. And I have not lead a group bigger than 3. I have done a fair amount of extended wilderness trips though.

If the week the OK group does not work for you and you want to do this trip I have all my notes and records from last year... here is the problem... your starting a little late (doesn't mean you can't pull it off) but the train reservations fill up fast - I would recommend if you can join the okc group to do it.. if not I can help whoever wants to put a trip on this OR ANY TRIP!!! ;-)

did anyone else REALLY want to do this hike, but not get to RSVP before it filled up? Maybe we could plan another just like it??? I was suppopsed to do this same backpack as my vacation last year, but that fell thru due to my hiking partner being injured. I would love to do this one!!!!

Ray, our Oklahoma group did what I call a bonding hike a couple weeks ago just to meet everyone and get a feel of each other's fitness level and hiking style. We are in the process of doing 8-10 milers on weekends with 50-75% pack weight. We will increase pack weight gradually. We do not have the mountains to train on but we have selected areas with 8-10% grade. During we week we are hitting the gym with cardio and core strength building. Suggesting to the Oklahoma group to get the pack weight established and start hiking with this progressively.

Sounds good. Maybe a suggested training regimen from the organizer would be a good idea
