Each year I do one or two extended backpacks and this is one that I have been researching a couple years. It is one of the must do backpacking trips in Colorado. It is roughly 38 miles with elevations to 12,500 feet.
The awesome part of this trip is you take the Durango to Silverton train to the Elk Creek trailhead. You then make the 38 mile loop and time the end of your trip to catch the train heading back to Durango. You simply wave down the train and they pick you up.
This is a challenging hike and requires some experience in backpacking along with a good fitness level.
Plans are to drive to Durango, spend one night in a hotel or hostel. Catch the train the following morning and be hikng by noon. Spend the next 5 days backpacking through the Chicago Basin area. After day 5, will meet the train and arrive back in Durango late that eve. Would spend the night in a hotel, then head back to OKC the following day.
I realize this trip is 7 months away but this gives a person time to start honing their skills in backpacking along with training for the hike.
If interested in the hike, plese shoot me an email. I want to keep the group to 5 or 6 and we will be hiking/training together to prepare for the trip.
As an option for people that might want to ride the train from Durango to Silverton and not do any backpacking this is a perfect time to discuss. Another option would be to shorten your backpacking trip to 1-2 days instead of 5.
