Distance From Trailhead - 1.8 miles
Campsite Elevation 9,200 feet
Elevation Gain From Trailhead - 800 feet

Mill Creek Basin in Rocky Mountain National Park is an excellent site for first time backpackers since it is so close to Hollowell Park Trailhead. It is located in open woodlands with little underbrush, so it feels very expansive. The bridge over the stream used to access the campsite is a wonderful place to cook, eat and relax. The pit toilet has two walls for privacy. See: http://www.rmnpguide.com/backcountry-campsite-index/130-uppermillcreek.html

There are many great trails and lakes to explore from this campsite, including shorter and day long hikes.

There is no extra cost to attend this meetup. There is a cost to enter RMNP. Though there is no meetup or campsite cost, there are some requirements:

- A carry-in/carry-out bear resistant food storage canister is required, which can be rented or purchased at local sporting goods stores.
- We practice Leave No Trace ethics of minimal impact and carry out everything that we carry in.
-We need to purify our own water (I have equipment) and use stoves only as no fires are allowed.

I have this campsite reserved for the nights of Friday June 20, Saturday June 21, and Sunday June 22. My plan is to depart for the campsite Friday morning at about 10 am, and to return Sunday afternoon. I'd prefer that we all backpack up together on Friday. There is schedule flexibility for those who might want to return home earlier or later on Sunday, or stay until Monday.

For further info on backcountry camping at RMNP, see http://www.nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/upload/backcountry_camping_guide_2012.pdf

RMNP allows a maximum of seven (7) people at this campsite. I have one person coming with me so far, so have room for five more.

How to sign up: A. Put yourself on the RSVP waitlist.

You guys were great. Thanks for your patience for my first time backpacking wife and for putting up with me. The first night she said never again and the last day she asked when we were gonna do it again. Go figure?

Campsite wasn't too bad, day hikes in RMNP were great, and my fellow hikers were even better. I had a great time!

    Suggested itinerary:
I'd like to do a 12 mile day hike on Saturday like the loop to Helene, Odessa, Fern Lakes & Cub lakes. Never been up there, it looks great. The hike to Flattop Mtn. is a good one also (around 10 mi.) Both hikes are at least intermediate level with some elevation gain. Since Friday is a short day, a visit to Bierstadt or Bear lake area is a possibility. I'm more of a hiker than a sit around the campfire kind a person. A morning hike on Sunday would be nice, before we return to the trailhead.

    Greg:
You might want to canvass the tribe to as to what they are capable of doing.

I'm open to having a meeting beforehand to discuss the options.

Also, if anyone is interested in Ultralight Backpacking, there is a meeting open to anyone at Neptune Mountaineering, Boulder, CO at 6:00 pm. tomorrow. Several members of Boulder Lightpackers will be displaying their gear (usually under 15 lbs base weight).

Just found out my family is organizing a party for my dad's birthday sat of this weekend. Big family reunion. So I unfortunately will have to be there and not here! Hope to see you all on another trip!

I will put you on the list. I initially chose those who did both using time stamps. But it's not a perfect process.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
