Hi everyone! Both of my carpool partners dropped off the trip. I'm wondering if anyone is actually planning on backpacking? If so, it's worth the trip for me.

Hi Ed. Not necessarily. I wanted to backpack for two nights.

    • Crystal

Yah, that's too crazy. I have to work on Tuesday and if I'm going to drive 7 hours, I want to stay and enjoy the view for a while.

A carpooling spot has opened up in my Subi...anyone want to join me? I leave around 7am on Wed. and return Sunday night.

I might be up for the backpacking too. I am also looking to carpool. I would like to leave Wed around noon and be back Sunday evening. I might want to bring my bike so I could drive.

That looks good to me. Are you thinking of starting Friday morning? Its jsut a 2 day trip right?

Yes, 2 nights, Friday and Saturday night.

A lady from SLC asked about day hikes and biking - There will be plenty of people doing day-hikes on this trip; for sure. And, if you want to find someone to borrow rappelling gear from we can take you down a very easy and scenic canyon adventure. But, YES, there will be many hikers and I know a few people have mentioned bikes but I have not seen any chatter about them. If you have a 2 burner stove and fuel, large pots and pans, camp dishwashing set-up, your own camp chair and other group gear -- please bring it. Better to have more group gear than we need rather than less. Bring LOTS of FIREWOOD.

In perusing the Western Slope Adventurers meet up site I noticed that few people are interested in back packing the Capitol Reef NP. I however am VERY interested in back packing there! Anybody else want to backpack?

Anyone know of a dog boarding place near the park or on the way from Colorado?

    November 8, 2012

    • Doug Van E.

I do not know of any in particular but there are many in Grand Junction/ Fruita. Call Mary as she has been making those kinds of connections since she and I moved here 20 months ago. THis is the same Mary who is coordinating food for the feast[masked]-5985. Or, Google the topic in Grand Junction.

OK, thanks for the heads up about carrying our own water...did Paria canyon and Buckskin gulch years ago but did not do any technical slot canyonering. Started checking out the hikes...looks very cool!

I am not recalling his name now but call the park and ask to speak with the Chief Ranger. He has contacted me to offer help in any way that out group or members may want it. Tell him that you are with Doug's group coming for Thanksgiving and he will know the you are part of the group he has so generously offered to help.

All of you please send you first and last name, cell #, regular email address and any special dietary needs to my wife, Mary Hertert. As she did for thanksgiving in Canyonlands Natl Park last year, Mary is again offering to coordinate food so we get a good balanced dinner for turkey &/or ham eaters; veggies and vegans are successfully accommodated and equally well fed; and many other details are stewed, boiled or pan roasted. Please email Mary your information to [masked]. Her # if you need to call is[masked]-5985.

By the way, among things we will need are large study tables, 2 or 3 burner propane or white gas stoves, lots of cooler space (for pre-meal food and for left-overs), pots & pans, griddles or skillets for pancake/ french toast/ eggs breakfast(s), serving bowls, serving spoons and related items. If you are a river rafter or otherwise know what a propane 'blaster' is, we need that and 3 metal buckets for dish-washing.

Hi Crystal, I too would like to carpool with you and I would VERY much like to backpack. I'll start doing research on water availability, not sure if we have to carry water or if there is water for the taking. James[masked]

Hey all, I joined the other meetup and read up on the details. I've decided that I am going to leave on Wednesday morning and I have a Subaru Impreza Wagon for those who may want to carpool. I do actually want to backpack, and I have the gear for colder temps. The plan is to come back on Sunday to be ready for work on Monday. Let me know if you are interested in carpooling or backpacking?

    Hey--this might be fun.

Oh it will be fun for sure. We have folks coming from Denver, Western CO, Salt Lake, Alaska . . .

Many will ask about weather - the Park Service web site says we can expect night temps on the high 20's and days in the high 50's. You can always get the weather update and 10 day forecast at NOAA http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=slc&textField1=38.37&textField2=-110.72&smap=1

The FULL SCOOP on this event can be found at http://www.meetup.com/WesternSlopeAdventurers/events/42581932/ This event is shared with www.WesternSlopeAdventurers.org, our group, 2 from Salt Lake and one from Anchorage, AK. Full details will always be found first at the WSA site link above. 2 weeks before the event, my wife Mary Hertert, will contact everyone to get an update on your Y or N RSVP and at that time she will start matching the food we want/ need for a TOTAL FEAST with the people who at that time are COMMITTED to going on the event. You are welcome to come for all or part of the weekend but what she will need to know is if you plan to be there for thanksgiving dinner (and YES, there are numerous vegetarians and vegans attending. If you are one of these, please make note of that in your RSVP). Looking forward to a great time. Let me suggst that as you read this you PLEASE go up-date your RSVP if you know now that you are or are not planning to attend.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
