Island Lake in the San Juan Mountains Near Silverton
We will meet at the Pine Junction Park N Ride lot at about 6:45 am. We will leave at 7:00 am so try not to be late! To get to this lot, take 285 west from Denver to Pine. US 285 and Pine Valley Rd. I will send more details to all that RSVP. Carpooling should be encouraged; the trip alone is 325 miles one way to Silverton and estimated at about 6.5 hrs driving time, although I have faith we can make better time, we need to try to make good time to get to the trail as early as possible. Naturally it would help the environment to drive less cars and help the drivers pay for gas. While the trip there may be long, from what I hear, the San Juan Mountains provide some of the most breathtaking sites in Colorado backpacking providing amazing scenic photo moments from waterfalls to wildflowers. Our final destination is Island Lake, about 4.5 miles into the San Juan from Silverton with an impressive elevation hike at points. The lake itself is crystal clear blue with an island in the middle at the base of mountains in the upper basin from Ice Lake. (details to trail head are at the bottom)
I have never hiked this trail before, but from research that I have done, it is a moderate hike and we will need to cross Clear Creek which is supposed to have a bridge or pathway and later into the hike there are some semi rocky climbs. The elevation starts at 9,850 with a gain of 2,407 with the highest point near Island Lake reaching up to 12,400. We are hiking in Saturday August 28th hopefully close to 1pm and back out on Sunday August 29th. The ranger informed me that it is about a 4.5 mile hike and takes about 6 hours to hike to. Round trip is about 8 miles. We will hike to Ice Lake and from there continue a ? mile hike north to Island Lake. Depending on group making it back to parking lot on Sunday, there are 2 camping options to choose from: Mineral Creek Campground that runs from $12-$16 a night or free ?overflow camping? which means a piece of land to pitch a tent on only. I suggest camping here after a long couple of days to wake up early to travel back to Denver Monday morning or we can leave Sunday night if group prefers it. This is an ideal backpack trip for those wanting to take in some great views (recommend a camera). For those signing up, please be able to backpack be prepared for heat and or/ cold, since we will be in the San Juans. There are fire restrictions and no firewood above tree line, so bring a backpacking stove. We plan to observe Leave No Trace principles so please remember your trowels and trash bags to pack everything back out. I will send out more information as we get closer to the trip. Round trip should be close to 8 miles. Plenty of water opportunities, so bring a water filter.
Please read the Terms of Understanding/signup sheet in the Files section as I will be requesting everyone to sign this sheet at Pine Park and Ride.
This particular backpack trip is open to adults only. I love animals, but since this is my first trip leading, I?d prefer no dogs. Exceptions to this, please contact me to chat about it if it?s an issue. [masked]-2677. Our destination is the parking lot near South Mineral Creek Campground adjacent to the trailhead. We will make a very short stop at the Silverton Forest Station to pick up additional maps and info.

From the Pine Junction Park N Ride, continue taking US-285 for about 100+ miles until we get to US-50.
Turn right onto US-50 and continue on it for about 123 miles.
Turn left on US-550/S Townsend Ave Continue to follow US-550 S. for 59.2 miles
Turn Slight left onto CR-110/Greene St. Arrive at Forest Station 1428 Greene St.

If you choose to carpool, please remember to contribute money to the driver. I drive a mustang but can carry one more person with me.
Please email me if you have any questions. I know that this is a last minute trip and might bleed into Monday or might make a long night Sunday on the return, but this trip should be a blast! Are you in? Please RSVP ASAP! Will take RSVPs up until Friday August 27th at 5:00pm. Trying to limit the trip to no more than 15 people.
