Lets get together to talk 'shrooms, and how to get this group going!

  • This location is shown only to members

I know we haven't had any meetings, and I have never been an organizer before, but I really do want to keep this group alive!  I am experienced in several varieties of mushrooms, but don't want to go out by myself.  Lets get together to see who does have experience, who doesn't and where we want to take this group!

I am looking forward to meeting with you!

PS. this meeting time/place is open for discussion and change!

I would like to have somewhat of an agenda. I was thinking of starting off by finding out where everyone is at in their desire for this group and what knowledge they can share, or want to obtain.

Then, a brief discussion from the experienced ones, which I am happy to start and hopefully other experienced hunters will chime in, about what they know in general about forging for edibles ;o)

Ideas for future meet ups, ways we might want to expand this group (cook outs, camping, cattail pancake breakfast anyone?) and I do think I might be able to talk an experienced buyer/seller into giving us a lighthearted lecture (with show and tell of course!) in the near future.

And then, we'll take it from there!

Yesterday we discussed venturing into wild edibles along with mushrooms so I thought I would let everyone know that Becky Lerner, a Portland urban foraging expert, is teaching an Intro to Making Herbal Medicine class. I plan on making some mushroom tinctures so this class would be helpful. Here is a link: https://www.facebook.com/events/318902228242859/

Hey all, great meet up! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet any of you at the other end of the table but I'm sure to cure that next time. Here is a link to a facebook mushroom group that I managed to mention to a few of you. If your on FB I highly recommend joining the group, lots of information on identification to be found there.

Robert, the link doesn't work for me... could you just give the name of the group? thanks, Lani

      June 21, 2013

    • Robert

Hey Lani, you can try searching facebook for "FUNGUS AMONG US" but I just tried that and noticed that there are many to sift through. And it looks like there are a couple more I might be joining lol.

I didn't see the change of venue, arrived & waited at original place before heading home over the bridge. Sounds like it went well.

I'm sorry I missed the meeting. I had to drive from Tigard and sitting on the freeway for 25min.convinced me I would arrive very late and not in the best state of mind for a meeting. Also after reading some of the comments I realized I would have gone to the wrong location. I hope there are meetings in the future at a different location that is easier to get to. I actually live in Portland my daughter and grandkids are in Tigard.

    June 21, 2013

    • Karen B.

Ken -there were two of us from Tigard there. I agree the sitting on the freeway put me in a bad mood so I was a little "grr" when I got there a bit late, but all the fun fungi people and a cool drink put me in a better mood soon after arriving. Next time may be a park on the weekend...

It was a good start in meeting and getting to know each other. We've got a great group, many with a lot of knowledge in foraging, and others that have the ability to offer the group good direction for future meet ups. Lots of good ideas came out of this meeting!

It was fun, and I really enjoyed meeting you all!

Enthusiastic people wanting to learn and teach as able about wild mushrooming. But very poor venue for this--too spread out and noisy to hear much of what went on,

Will someone post details for those of us who cannot attend? Thanks for sharing!

    1 · June 20, 2013

If this will be a Portland group, perhaps someone can correct the location (it still says it's based in Vancouver). That's the only real reason I signed up for it - to attend a group on this side of the river. There are several already on the Portland side (maybe not under meetup, but there are still several over there).

    June 19, 2013

      Whew! That's a relief.

We will still be coming tonight, but might be a wee bit late. Dah Hubz (which is REALLY looking forward to this meeting!) is working in The Dalles today. So he's hoping to be back soon, but the store is running long (he does inventory).

This meet up has grown large enough and with the NBA playoffs happening this Thursday, I am changing the venue, of our meeting place to Who Song and Larry's. It is still close by and there will be plenty of parking, and you can even catch the highlights of the game if you like. But it will be better suited for us meeting. Look for us upstairs!

Not only will this be a "meet and greet" (and I promise not to make you stand up and say anything, unless you want), but I think it would be beneficial to the group if we knew what we were all looking for in the group, and how we might get there. I want to allow the more knowledgeable people talk about what they know (briefly) about mushroom hunting, maybe some particulars that they know, geographical areas that we will be thinking about, safety concerns, etc. I expect more in-depth knowledge to come from later meetings.

Still, this will be a good meeting in getting us all together. We are looking forward to you coming!

    1 · June 19, 2013

  • Rene

Ok, so I'm not a big fan of basketball and I didn't realize the playoffs were still going on until last night. I went to Main Event to confirm our reservations, and though they said since we do have reservations we will have an area reserved regardless of the playoff outcome, I am concerned that being the Sports Bar it is, the noise level will be too much. I think any other time this venue would have worked just fine.

There should still be plenty of parking as we can park 2 blocks away at the Cinema, but please tell me your thoughts. Would you like to continue here and combine our meeting with the last game, or should we move it somewhere else? I was thinking The Rock, which is in the same vicinity but would need to see if their meeting room is available.

Any other ideas of a venue, or should we just continue with Main Event?

I will keep you posted with what I hear back and if we make a change in meeting place for tomorrow.

    Sorry about this!

Not a big fan of noise in general or loud tvs especially when I am trying to hear and converse with a group..

      June 19, 2013

    • Lise

I must agree with the others about not keen on sports bars. There's a place called Tigers Garden on W 8th St....anyone checked it out before (I haven't been). I know another meetup group has used it before, but not sure if it has a "back room" or anything. There's Peking Garden on 21st & Main. The restaurant side is usually pretty dead and quiet.

I'm open on the 20th Thursday eves are usually open..
I live in the PDX Gateway area close to 205 - yes, 5:30 P is not the best time to try to get across the river.
My only question with the Sports Grill: is it quiet??
Love casual picnic/BBQ's and open air.. with shade.. ;) we should take advantage of the weather whenever possible.. and any mushroom hunting... or even IDing specimens..
On a very limited budget but willing to make small donations.

So glad to see all of you here! I am completely open to a change in venue and/or day. I just wanted to start somewhere! Open for suggestions if there is a more central location or better time for us all to get together. Any ideas?

And John, I may very well ask for a modest donation, as you are correct that it is fairly expensive to be the sponsor. I also like your idea of the meet and greet picnic/BBQ.

What do the rest of you think?

    1 · June 8, 2013

    • Rene

Thank you all for being willing to chip in. With so many of us, it wouldn't have to be much, but anything would be appreciated. We can also discuss how donations might be handled.

    Hello,

I have been a mushroom forager for well over a decade now. I know most of western and somewhat eastern Oregon extremely well. As well parts of Washington. I hunt about 15+20 different edible mushrooms but really only concentrate on about six. Of course I know the really bad ones lol. I was asked to take on this group by the founder but I simply do not have the time. If I do make it out with the group I would happily share some knowledge.

    2 · June 14, 2013

    • Rene

Hi Steve, and Welcome!!! I am so glad you will be joining in and I am sure you have so much knowledge you can share with the group! I am looking forward to meeting with another fun guy ;o) comparing notes, and learning more! I think we have some in the group that know of other edibles besides 'shrooms to forager for, and we'll expand the group in that way also. See you on Thursday!

I've not seen any other mushroom group but this one, and it was originally based in Pdx, which is why I joined. What are the other group names?

      1 · June 11, 2013

  • Rene

Glad to see so many people still interested in this group! I do have some great ideas for future meet ups, and looks like you all are thinking of it too.

So it seems like it will be much easier for many if we moved the time out. I'm going to change it to 6:30. I don't want it being too late, but I know very well how hard it is coming down I-5 during rush hour!

We are getting quite the crowd too! Tho I just checked with Main Event, if we get too much bigger we might have to hold it somewhere else. I love the park idea, so if it looks like it might be somewhat warm that evening, lets plan to meet at Esther Shore Park.

I'll keep you up to date.

I am in Tigard. I am cool about going into Portland but I agree that that time to cross the river would kinda be hard. I am open for a restaurant meeting or potluck. I have a restricted diet so I will just show up to mingle. Love the idea of meeting to ID! I can contribute a little bit but I am on a tight budget too.

    June 9, 2013

    Ditto on Karen's remarks.

I am happy to help keep the group alive, but was a bit chagrined to see how much the sponsor gets to pay for the rest of us! Hate to say it but maybe some modest dues are in order.

I probably won't be attending on the 20th but don't count me out!
Perhaps a met & greet/picnic/barbeque/shroom hunting afternoon might draw a few more people; that could be a topic for the Vancouver attendees to kick around. In the mean time, thanks for jump-starting the group and let me know how I can help!
