    Hi Joann,
Welcome. I look forward to meeting you. A good starting place for patterns is www.ravelry.com.

Needles/yarn - numerous choices in this area. We have several "big box" stores - Joann, Michaels, and often Big Lots and Ollies. We also have many stores devoted to the sale of yarn (known as LYS - local yarn store). There are many online outlets. My favorite for yarn is www.knitpicks.com.

Do you have any specific pattern in mind (eg scarf, hat, sweater)? Thoughts on needles - straight, fixed circular, interchangeable?

Hope I'm not overwhelming you. If so, maybe come to the meetup first and get to talk with everyone and see the various choices.

    Hope this is helpful.
