My church is also knitting prayer shawls for the people in Newtown, CT.  The idea is to make a shawl for each person in Newtown, I think.  Howard Co Hospital is a good charity but Newtown might appeal to some.  I will get the address of where to send them in Newtown if anyone is interested.

I've had several folks contact me for sizing info so I went searching and found some site that should help for those of you that want to "create" an items on your own and not from a pattern :)

Knit, crochet, weave or sew!! :)

specific blanket sizes: http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/tips/afghsize.shtml
Those sizes are specific for bedding furniture - of course, anything between those sizes would work for blankets for babies to play on the floor!

Sizing chart for hats (preemies - adults): http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/size-chart.html#hat
This page also has foot lenghts if you wnat to make booties, and some blanket size suggestions as well.

Over the past few weeks several folks have expressed an interest in Columbia Sip and Knit doing some charity knitting again. I've contacted the Howard County Hospital. So far I have heard back from the Maternal Child Unit and the NICU. They were both very happy to be contacted and would gladly accept donations from our group!   Here's what they said: "Our patients seem to love the little colorful and soft blankets. Knit hats are wonderful. Make sure they are newborn size for heads approximately 12 - 14 inches in diameter. Someone is always in need and always very happy to have a lovely handmade item/gift. Hope this helps. Thank you!"   I went on Ravelry and did some simple searches and came up with lots of ideas!   Free Patterns on Ravelry:   baby mittens:  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#view=captioned_thumbs&availability=free&fit=baby&sort=popularity&pc=mittens baby hats: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#availability=free&fit=baby&sort=popularity&pc=hat&view=captioned_thumbs baby blankets: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#availability=free&fit=baby&sort=popularity&pc=babyblanket&view=captioned_thumbs preemies: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#view=captioned_thumbs&availability=free&fit=preemie&sort=popularity   I now have 2 boxes in my house labeled for baby donations. If you would like to knit a baby item, I will collect all donations and as a box gets filled up I will drop it off at the hospital. Please be sure that whatever yarn you use is soft and washable for their tender newborn skins.   Donations can be given to any of the organizers at the different meet-ups and they will get them to me. I will print out tags and place one on each item that says, "Handmade by a member of the Columbia Sip and Knit group"   If you have a siggestion for a future charity project, please email me!
