Vegan Potluck with the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

Mark your calendars for this joint event with the Unitarian Universalist Animal Ministry group!

They would like their congregation to learn more about healthy plant-based foods, so we decided to throw a potluck after the Sunday service.

All are welcome at the UU- please feel free to attend the service if you would like (your faith or lack of it makes no difference), or just come for the potluck.

Bring a vegan dish (no meat, meat broths, fish, eggs, dairy or honey) to share- especially if you are an experienced vegan cook- or bring yourself (and a donation of a couple of bucks if you can) and enjoy the food and fellowship.  Feel free to bring any veg-curious friends or family members.

The UU has an event hall, kitchen and all the dishes we'll need.

Please post below if you're bringing food so we know what we'll have on hand, and to give others an idea of what they should prepare.

Sorry I wasn't able to attend. Hope there will be something similar again.

One person from the UU church, Stanley, was interred in knowing more about how to preserve fresh produce. I found this page on on OrganicGardening.com com which has some good tips for buying and preserving some fresh produce. http://www.organicgardening.com...

It was great meeting so many Veg folks at the event. We have a FB page to encourage members of the church to consider Meatless Monday. If you are on Facebook please like us at the UUCC Meatless Monday page.

I thought the food was great! (I'm sorry I arrived late, but not late enough to miss sharing the food, lol). And I was able to talk with some nice folks there.

I found the emphasis on fake meats and cheeses a bit disappointing, but perhaps some people need the transitional foods in order to make the switch to a veg lifestyle - ?

    February 24, 2013

    • Rosemary

Yes, the point of this event was to show people who are not used to vegan food that they don't have to give up everything they like. VegFund donated a grant to buy the Daiya, Gardein and Tofurkey products.

There is a microwave, stove and a couple of outlets for crock pots in the UU kitchen, in case anyone needs to warm their food. (I'm told only one microwave at a time should be in use)

VegFund has given us a grant to purchase vegan 'meats' (Gardein chicken strips and Tofurkey stuff) and 'cheeses' (Daiya jalapeno/garlic 'havarti' is my favorite) to sample at the lunch! They are awesome!

It is perfectly fine if you cannot arrive at UU by 12:00. Our services often run late, so please take the time to go to your individual churches and just come on afterward! - Anita Grossman, Committee Chair for the Animal Ministry at UU.

Well, I'm new to this and still trying to learn. But, I really enjoya recipe I have for raw/vegan ranch dressing, so I'll bring that with some veggies.

So far we have a pumpkin pie, possibly a tofu quiche, Asian seitan stir-fry, chili, some sort of black bean thing and a cake (not sure what type of cake). Please post what you plan to bring so 5 people don't show up with quinoa. Thanks! :)

    February 17, 2013

    • Karen H.

I actually think I will bring a quinoa/veggie dish. I won't be arriving until around 12:20-30. Will be coming from my church, then running home to get my food.

I'm thinking I'll make the Happy Herbivore crustless pumpkin pie recipe but use a graham cracker crust. Maybe also something brunchy like a tofu quiche...

Is there a running list of the menu of yet?

People can bring what they like- posting here or in their rsvp comment. I'll have info on what UU members are bringing closer to the date.

Would like to attend, but will not be able to get there until about 12:20 pm. Will it be disruptive if I arrive after the 12 noon hour?
