HER at Gateway Film Center

This week we’ll get together to take in an under-the-radar, unconventional, and terrifically reviewed film called HER!  Several Golden Globe nominations have already been received and Oscar nominations are expected!  HER stars Joaquin Phoenix stars as a lonely writer who develops an unlikely relationship with his computer's highly advanced operating system.  Sounds goofy but check out the trailer below!  Here’s a description, trailer and plan:

DESCRIPTION:  Set in Los Angeles in the near future, Her follows a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.  The film is directed by Spike Jonze and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Chris Pratt, Rooney Mara, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Amy Adams and the voice of Scarlett Johansson.

• Rotten Tomatoes, which has the film rated an excellent 91%, describes the film this way: “Sweet, soulful, and smart, Spike Jonze's Her uses its just-barely-sci-fi scenario to impart wryly funny wisdom about the state of modern human relationships.”

• Peter Travers of Rolling Stone says, “Johansson's vocal tour de force is award-worthy. So is the movie. Jonze is a visionary whose lyrical, soulful meditation on relationships of the future cuts to the heart of the way we live now.”

• Kenneth Turan, film reviewer for the LA Times, says: “Acerbic, emotional, provocative, it's a risky high dive off the big board with a plot that sounds like a gimmick but ends up haunting, odd and a bit wonderful.”

PLAN:  Showtime has been confirmed!  We'll be seeing the 7:00pm showing of HER at the Gateway Film Center!  Purchase your ticket (just $6.50 when you let them know you're with the Movie Group) and meet me in the upstairs lobby between 6:30 and 6:40pm. We'll head in early for what should be an excellent film!  After the show, be sure to join us next door at Mad Mex for conversation, food and drinks!

I agree with Vicki's comments agreeing with Dan's thoughts! I was thinking some of the same stuff. I was also thinking: Remember when "HER" said she wished she had a body? There was a movie like that with a similar tech theme, it was called "Demon Seed", the OS in that one DID get a body... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon_Seed

I agree with Dan's thoughts and I have spent some time trying to think though how Hal from Space Odessey and Data from Star Trek act as ancestors or beta programs. I have been wondering if there really were different operating system or just one designed to personalize to each user. When I buy an operating system for my Apple, it is the same one millions of others buy....... Lol. The most thought provoking love story I have ever seen!

I LOVED it! The story was extremely moving and Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was amazing! The movie touched on so many themes: loneliness, connection with others, the role of technology. Funny at times, heartbreaking at others, but always right on target. Enjoyed seeing it with the group and had a great time conversing about it with everyone afterwards at Mad Mex!

Tonight was my first meet-up. Definitely a great group of people! Sorry I couldn't make it to Mad Mex, but am looking forward to next time.

I thought it was interesting that you really couldn't tell when Her took place. The styles looked very '70s/'80s, but it had to be sometime in the future...

Definitely an interesting one. I'm not sure what to think of it ... in a good way though...
