You guys took some awesome photos. I'm so glad you guys captured the essence of the trip. Truly memorable.

This was an excellent ride. Some of the turns were the highest degree of difficulty (switchbacks with elevation changes) and everyone navigated them flawlessly. I had the best time on this trip and enjoyed the time I spent with everyone. The bluetooth headsets enabled us to stay in constant communication which increased our level of safety and made the ride most enjoyable. I also saw another bear. It was awesome.

What's with all the ursine encounters? Bear magnet? :-)

Lots of gentle and some not so gentle curves, great for up and coming riders to improve their skills, and then there are those 'tail-like' rides up and down the mountain to the parkway that only the adventurous would enjoy. Also some great roads off the parkway to one motel and on the way there and back. Stayed off freeways for the most part. New appreciation for inclined surfaces. Really enjoyed all 5 of the other riders as they were experienced in these types of all day excursions and the level of concentration to be safe and not a threat to the others, makes a big difference in satisfaction on a multi-day journey like this. The 3 intercoms amongst us made the time not only go by faster but also provided added safety as the lead warned following riders (those with intercom) of upcoming road conditions and hazards, items of interest to observe (which helped in taking photos and video), and general conversation in real time, no buttons to push.

I just received a packet from the Blue Ridge Parkway Assn. that provides map, and complete directory of the parkway from Cherokee to Front Royal. Anyone interested in exploring what to expect, let me know and perhaps we can touch base over weekend or Monday evening. Based on my last trip there, we can expect to average 20-25 MPH travel/stop time because there are few places to pass cars/campers, weekend tourists and they are all rubbernecking and normally not meeting the posted speed limit. I can hardly wait.

I'm game. I'll be busy Saturday and Monday for the most part, Sunday after 12 is best for me. Or Tuesday night. Other takers?

I'm out of town this weekend. Let me know what you guys decide. You can email me too. I'll be in Pitt going over it with Darin this weekend. We will look at scenic stops too.

Wish i could....would love to do a wkend bike trip!"

    August 21, 2013

  • Jeff D.

I'm with Bernie on this one. I am a surprised that we would consider canceling the ride because Ron is unable to go. I plan to go on this ride and have the time scheduled off. Ron did a fantastic job setting this up. All we have to do is execute. I can lead/help lead the ride. I am free Sunday afternoon. I will see if the room at the Donatos in old Hilliard is available for us to meet this Sunday afternoon. That will give us time to discuss any issues and chart it out. I will not be on the Mohican ride Saturday.

Whoa! Ride cancelled?? I'm ready to go. Suggestions for a time and location for a meeting to re-organize and firm up trip, key points to hit, etc?? We can get a boatload of info. from others who have recently made the journey. End of summer and fall soon will be upon us and my riding bucket list is not filled for this year yet.

    August 20, 2013

    • Sam, I a.

Sounds like a plan. I'm sure Mr. Plumley had a good reason for bailing on us. If most of us are going for the Mohican State Park ride this saturday, perhaps we can confer before, after or even at lunch? Getting to and from Virginia is not the problem. I'm personally unsure of what to do on the BRP/Skyline. Ride Lead by committee sounds good to me. :-)

I have the route for the Blue Ridge Parkway ride in early September. We will be taking 33 southeast out of Columbus to 77 south ending up at Fancy Gap on the Parkway. Spend the night at Fancy Gap then do the Parkway in morning with a stay in Bueno Vista at the midpoint. After the Parkway (and Skyline Drive) ride - stay the night at Front Royal. Depart for home in am on 81 N to 127 NW ending up on 68 W to 40 NW to Uniontown PA where we will pick up 43 N (Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Road) to 70W and home. Going home we will be going near Ohiopyle (40 goes thru this area) and great scenery (as if we really need more after all the miles on the Parkway) but should be nice. All of this in 4 days and should be a hoot. Really looking forward to puttin those miles under the wheels! Per Google Maps just over 6 hrs to get home riding time

Diane- we will be leaving Sep 5 and get back Sep 8. Wish you were going to. Should be a great ride and i am looking forward to hittin the road!

    March 12, 2013

  • Jeff

I had also checked google maps and found the same thing (faster and less mileage taking 33). The speed limit is lower but since the mileage is less, it's less time in the end (and lower speed limit = safer?). Based on that, if there were no traffic issues it would get you there sooner, but if it turned out there were, then maybe it's a wash. Now we have 4 cents worth! :)

    1 · March 9, 2013

  • Bernie N.

Just a personal opinion and I want to be a team player, but Google maps shows the 70-77 route to be both 50 miles longer and takes an additional 20 minutes. The ride via 33 is much more scenic (in my opinion) with plenty of gas and accommodations. It is more bike friendly than slow semis on 70 and most of the pavement is smoother. Just my 2 cents.

    1 · March 9, 2013

my opinion, 70 to 77. Yes it is 50 miles more but you will get there quicker. You will have plenty of gas/food stops on the way, no towns to go through, no traffic on the roads to slow you up. You don't want to be wore out getting to Fancy Gap with 3 days of riding ahead of you. Remember you will be in a group of bikes and being in a group will slow you down a little versus being a single bike or two bikes.

    March 9, 2013

  • Jeff

Just my opinion, I've driven to 77 South many times and I've become fond of 33 out of Columbus, most of the road is very good and it goes around Lancaster now which used to kill time. There are still a few small towns (i.e. Nelsonville) to sneak through but hey, you need to stop for fuel now and then anyway. Anyone else have feedback on 33 to 77?

    1 · March 8, 2013

  • Bernie N.

Comment regarding route 23 to 35 and linking up at I-64. We go to Richmond, Va often and I choose route 33 through Athens on to I-77 and then to I-64. I find this preferable either in car or on bike. 33 now has numerous bypasses, speed limit is much better, fewer speed issues and the scenery is quite nice. About the same time either way.

    1 · March 8, 2013

  • Ronald P.

As to the Blue Ridge Pkway Ride, another route is 23 south out of Columbus, to 35 southeast to Charleston WVA then pick up 64 to 77 south to start. This would be a bit shorter (50miles) then the 70E to 77S but will have to deal with going thru towns here and there. If anybody has done this route please chime in as I am good either way - like anything plus and neg to each. I have not ridden 35 but this part of Ohio is rural so may not be much in the way of stops

    March 8, 2013

  • Ronald P.

I am looking at a Sept 5 thru 8 timeframe for the Blue Ridge Parkway ride. First, I was planning a south to north ride on the Pkwy (Fancy Gap to Front Royal) this includes Skyline drive. So to get there - could do 70E out of Columbus to 77 at Cambridge and head south. Spend the night at Fancy Gap and start in the morning second day to Bueno Vista where we could spend the night (this is about the halfway point). We would then finish the scenic part of the ride to Front Royal (spend night). Then take short route to 70W and home (4th day). So, give feedback on route and such. I am think we will be getting our scenic ride fill on the Pkwy and Skyline Drive and the rest is get there and back. Will be working on lodging and sights but this is the rough draft of the ride and welcome input!

When will a date be chosen for this ride?

    March 7, 2013

  • Bernie N.

Suggest the BR Pkwy trip be extended by 1-2 days. Avg. 35-40 mph + leave Pkwy to gas up and eat + sightseeing.

I am questioning if 4 days is long enough. a friend at work rode it last year and said you have to do 300 miles a day to ride the whole parkway from here and return. Maybe 5 days? Thoughts???

    February 27, 2013

    • Ronald P.

Hey Diane - I was talking to a guy from work who did this ride recently and gave me an outline of their ride. One thing he noted - fog - and it was downright dangerous during their early morning ride. He said they did the ride but in hindsight not a good thing to do. So, I am thinking of either building another day into this thing or/and not doing the whole Parkway so we are not constricted by time and feel rushed to get it done. It is primary to be safe, followed by fun so I will look at those options and get more into. Wanted to get back with you though and TTYL

I rode the top end down to roanoke Va. Took 9 hours because the speed limit is 35 MPH in Va. The rest is 45 MPH. Might want to start at cherokee and head north. Anyone that wants to cut out early could head home from roanoke. Its a nice ride up 77 and the W.Va turnpike!!

When choosing a date remember that 98 degrees in ashville will mean 50-60 degrees at 6000 ft. on the parkway!!!
