MAMMOTH CAVE KENTUCKY (3 DAYS, 2 NIGHTS)

RIDER SKILLSET FOR THIS RIDE: Intermediate rider and above
skillsets: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced

All,

Tom Harbour will not be able to go on the trip so I will be hosting it. The ride is two weeks away!!

Here are a few links of what to pack for the trip. One is a list Bruce put in the files section: Bruce's list and here is the discussion thread from last years Smokies trip. Discussion thread.

I would also like to make a list of everyones phone number and share the list with everyone going on the trip. It is a good idea to have everyones phone number and an accurate list of who is going.  So, please email me with your name, co rider and your phone number. If you have friends riding too, I would like their information also. I will send the list out to everyone that is going on the trip as soon as it is complete. My email address: bikerbabe043 at yahoo.com. AS OF TODAY, I AM MISSING TWO RIDERS PHONE NUMBERS.  IF YOU HAVE NOT EMAILED ME YOUR PHONE NUMBERS, PLEASE DO SO ASAP SO I CAN SEND THE LIST TO EVERYONE ON THE RIDE. *IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SHARE YOUR NUMBER, EMAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW.

Use the comment thread below to address concerns or email me. I want everyone to be on the same page so we will have a fun, safe trip!!

PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL FORM, FILL IT OUT AND PLACE ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE EM FORM

~Diane

~~~~~~~~~~
This ride will be 295 miles. The route has been modified to stay off of the interstate. We will be taking RT 62, RT 68.  Google maps says 6 hours, 19 minutes. With lunch and breaks I think adding two hours is a good guess. It looks like we will have 13 bikes, and we will stay in one group.  To keep the travel time at a minimum, please be considerate of others and have a sense of how much time you are taking at breaks; have a small sense of urgency, (have to keep moving) when we stop. If we take 30 minute breaks, we will never get there in one day!
Here is the link to the route going down: The route
Be ready to ride at 8:00 am. Arrive early if you plan on having breakfast.
***HELMET LAW*** KY has a restricted Helmet Law, under 21 and for newer riders. Click on the link to read more about the helmet law. KY Helmet Law
We will be staying at the Super 8 Motel, 799 Mammoth Cave St., Cave City, KY.  Phone 1- 270- 773- 2500.  They have very nice rooms, Internet, microwave, free breakfast, swimming pool, etc.  The rates can't be beat.  They have rooms right now, but remember this is a tourist area, so book your room early.
*** If you book your room calling the number above, the price is a little more than booking online with a 24 hour cancellation option.
*** If you book your room online, it is cheaper rate but.... NO REFUNDS.
The rooms aren't blocked, so tell them you want a room close to one of us that has already booked. We can be close to each other this way.
    Wow!. What a great time with fantastic people. Many thanks to Diane, Tom and Andy for all their organizing. Just an FYI, I made it safely to Alabama with 3 hours of rain riding and only one "additional adventure" darned KY road signs! :-)
    2 · June 10, 2013
    • Jeff
      They have a different alphabet for the signs I think . . . if there are signs at all.Glad you made it there safely, wet or dry. Have a good time and good ride back.
    Best group ride I've ever been on! (inside joke, but still true) I sincerely enjoyed the camaraderie and already look forward to the next journey. Many thanks to everyone for making me feel like a part of this group. Special thanks to lead and tail riders for keeping us organized, safe, and entertained; without you there would be no ride. Great photos too! I'll post mine soon.
    The trip down was a beautiful motorcycle route, lots of curves and hills. A great group of people who seemed to get along well. The accommodations were fine and the scenery was wonderful.
    So what you're saying is, bring the rain gear but leave the cold weather insulation at home, I take it. Right now I see scattered showers all day Friday wherever I check along the route, so if it stays like that I might start wearing the waterproofing layer from the get-go.
      As of 6/5 Accuweather.com shows we will hit some showers before we get to Cincinnati, a 3 pm shower in Lexington and 3pm & 7pm shower in Cave City. So, we will definitely start out in rain gear unless the forecast changes! The weekend still looks awesome!! :)
    The weekend looks like it will be awesome riding weather! Saturday 80° and Sunday 83°. Friday we might get a little wet on the road. I see some showers posted early afternoon.
    This weekend I will be working on the route down and looking at the roads to ride down around Cave City. This ride will be here before you know it! Important things to have with you: the emergency medical form, a spare motorcycle key, if you wear glasses, bring along your old pair for a back up, extra bike fuses, Tylenol, rain gear, small first aid kit. These are just a few items to have with you. More than likely we will always be riding with part of our group, so what you don't have onboard, others might.
      James, it is rain or shine unless the weather is so bad that it would be a danger to be on a bike. So, take the rain gear!
    I am looking at the route and considering jumping off of the interstate around Louisville or a little more south around Shepardsville. With doing this it will add more travel time but the scenery should make up for it. What do you all think?
    I know many of you are not aware that I was diagnosed with skin cancer on my face. I had two surgeries to remove the cancer and stitches from the last surgery were removed today. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make the ride to Mammoth Cave. The doctor strongly recommended that I not make the ride. The doctor feels that it is too much, too soon. The area where they removed the cancer and did a skin graft is to fragile for highway speeds on a motorcycle. Please do not let my situation interfer with your plans to attend the ride, go and have fun. I have attached the information I put together for the trip. Also note, that Nelda will not be making the trip.
    Thank you for your understanding.
    My wife wants to know if we would like a "chase car" on this trip. She'd like to go but won't ride on a motorcycle that far. She could haul some extra luggage or someone else's wife if so.
      Maybe the four of us could go out for dinner so our wives could meet. Let me know what you think.
      John, it would be a good idea to go out for dinner and I can meet your wife. Friday and Saturday nights are best for us. Nelda
    • Jeff
      Absolutely! At the moment I'm signed up to take the Spring Hike at Clear Creek next Saturday (south of Lancaster), pending decent weather. Hike is 5-7 miles. Carpool is meeting at Kaplan College (2745 Winchester Pike, Columbus, OH) at 9 AM, of course I am riding solo. know there are other bikers here that are also a part of the Hike Ohio meetup group so perhaps there could be others joining. I'm not organizing this, just mentioning an opportunity and my destination. Park is located at 185 Clear Creek Road, Rockbridge, OH.
