PARKING LOT PRACTICE - RIDE SKILLS TUNE - UP!

The weather forecast is absolutely AWESOME for our practice! "Times of sun and clouds and a high of 70°"

From I-270 on the northeast side take the Cleveland Avenue exit south to the first light and TURN RIGHT.
(Home Depot - O'Charlies - McDonalds on the corner)

TURN RIGHT at the XENOS driveway just past HOME DEPOT.

Follow the driveway all the way back to our reserved lot!

RIDER SKILLSET FOR THIS RIDE: Beginner rider & above

We have permission again this year to use a large private parking lot just one traffic light away from I-270.  When you see the sign for the church turn in that entrance and follow the road back.  It will gently curve to the left and then continue straight and go beyond the first parking lot and building to the second parking lot.

Come on out Saturday April 27th at 1:00 pm for a great group riding skills refresher to kick off the 2013 riding season! The skills will be set from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm so come on out anytime during those hours.

If you want to help set up, arrive around 12:15 pm or so!

FYI:

The lot is large enough to have each of the four corners set up with one or two skills and the lengths set up with cone weave and the other side set for slow speed/reg speed  straight line riding.

Plans are:

Slow speed straight ride, 3 to 5mph riding as slow as you can, keeping the bike upright and moving without losing control and a foot going down (you should be in 2nd gear).

Straight line with stop/ starts (practice the correct way to stop your bike).

Cone weave (counter steering) both two handed and one handed.

Double U turn set

Obstacle avoidance (swerve to the right or left)

Sharp turns (moving and from a complete stop).

Braking in a curve to a stop

Straight line braking

Riding over an obstacle (2x4 piece of wood)

Figure Eight in a box

Depending on the turnout we might have to take turns and have some bikes side lined at times. We will see how this pans out! So,if you are sidelined for a bit, you can help with the sets or watch and critique others.

None of the excercises are rated as expert riding. These exercises are to sharpen and fine tune your daily riding skills. Slow manuevers are the most difficult to master, but you need them "mastered" for the crowded parking lots and congested traffic on the highways.

As you know, you cannot critique your own riding, so if a suggestion comes your way, take it constructively and consider what is being said to help improve your riding skillset. There will be all skillsets attending and none of us are "perfect" riders. We all acquire bad habits with anything we do, so keep an open mind, have fun and learn something new or just sharpen that skillset and meet our fellow CMR members!

Hopefully everyone jumps in to offer suggestions to each other and if you are unsure on how to correct a problem with your riding or not sure how to do something, ask about it so you can practice it and overcome it!

This practice is our group practicing their skillsets. None of us are "certified" ride instructors, we are using our knowledge, wisdom, accomplishments and failures to help each other improve our riding abilities.

See you on Saturday April 27th at 1:00 pm!

What a great day i only wish i could have done more , regretfully after dropping ,y bike on the uphill left hand turn i felt very awkward and underqualified everyone aropund me was doing so well. I will however endeavour to be better for next springs event, I would like to ride with anyone who wants to do a weekend trip or even just a sat ride.

Aw Rob, it happens, this is the perfect time to hone skills in a 'safe' environment, and not on the street. Hopefully only pride was hurt and nothing physical. I almost dropped a couple times myself, no wonder I'm a little sore today! I'll be practicing the box whenever I see an open lot for sure!

Oh Brooks, exactly what Jeff said. Better there than the road. I think you forgot the proverb "When you fall of the horse you must get back on". I wish you would have stayed and overcome the misadventure. That is what this practice was about, hone up those skills!

What a great day! Let's see... THANK YOU Bill, Chris, John, Andy, Tom, Ted, Andrew, Janet and Lori for all of the help! Oh, I hope I didn't forget anyone! I really appreciate the help! I was watching the practice and it looks like we have some great riders in the group! It was a goooood practice! After the practice several of us that were still there decided to ride to Mechanicburg for an early dinner. The ride was great and so was the food and company. A good motorcycle day. :)

Came in late and missed the guidance to the maneuvers. Very useful practice nevertheless. Especially enjoyed the figure 8 in a 24' box a.k.a. "So you thought you knew how to ride a bike". Thanks to Diane and Andrew and all the brave souls who stood in front of the oncoming bikes.

Diane and Tom did a masterful job of creating a great day of skill set challenges and improvements for everyone! It was fantastic to see so many of you and so many new CMR enthusiasts. And on a personal note - when I finally got home I went to the garage and started my scooter right up on the first press of the starter button! AAArrrggghhh! But hey, at least it runs!

See you all on the road... and ride safe!

    Weather Forecasts
I am posting this to explain how I manage my meetups. We have a lot of new members that have not experienced our meetup events. I am well aware that Ohio weather is very unpredictable; I have experienced it from day one of my being.

If I have a meetup set, especially before I can determine what the weather will be like, I post my findings, sometime as early as three weeks prior as a heads up. The heads up could be for a possible cancel, a move to another date (rain date) or be prepared we are riding in rain. The determination depends on what the ride is about. I do this as a courtesy and to keep everyone in the loop of what is going on with the scheduled meetup. I am watching the weather forecast, just in case other members are watching and questioning if it is a go or not. Since I post weather forecasts, other members do too, which is always welcome! We all know none of the weather websites state the same forecast!

Posting weather updates avoids me getting bombarded with emails wondering if a ride is on or not. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind emails, especially if you have judgmental opinions, please email me instead of polluting the website. This group is about riding, riding, more riding, making new friends, and socializing! It looks like there will be a ton of bikes attending. This is the most we have had at a skills tune up/parking lot practice. Some of us might have to be side lined for a bit as others practice their skills. Safety is a must so everyone please have your patience that day and everyone will be able to practice!
If you normally ride solo and want to try riding with a passenger, you can do that too. We did this last year and road the perimeter starting, stopping and just getting the feel of the bike! Just ask a member if they are willing to get on the back of your bike!
Ok, I babbled long enough. See you Saturday!
      ~Diane
