Hocking Hills Fall Colour Ride

HOCKING HILLS FALL COLOUR RIDE

This ride is a ride through curves, hills and swerves. Suggestive skillset is a 6 out of 10.

GROUP SAFETY, ride responsibly, no “trick” riding and absolutely no alcoholic consumption during the ride. We ride staggered formation 2 -3 seconds apart on normal roadways, single file on curvy and/or narrow roads. No "football field" gaps in the group formation. If you are unsure of how to group ride, please refer to the “Pages” section of the website. There will be a riders meeting prior to departure.

This ride will have a large number of bikes, we will break down into smaller groups. The groups will be created by skillset/type of rider. We did this in the Smokies and it worked out well. I am looking for volunteers to lead the smaller groups. Requirement, you have led a group before. The google map route is below and I will upload the route to the "Files" section of our Meetup site.

Arrive with full gas tanks. Kickstands up at 10:00 AM.

Missy, The ride meeting is a short meeting before we take off this happens at every ride. We quickly go over riding as a group and anything special about the specific ride. If there are any questions, they are answered! So, please plan on listening to me yak a bit before we head out! :)

I am new to group riding but was thinking about joining ya'all at least for part of the ride. Might peel off from the group and head into Athens to the burrito buggy. Then back on US 33. What do you mean by skillset 6 out of 10? Tim

As a former Special Deputy Sheriff Motorcycle Officer for Franklin County one of the biggest issues is keeping the groups together and not have an "accordian" effect where some riders leave way too much space between themselves and the rider in front of them. If a CMR rider doesn't maintain a proper, safe, and reasonably "snug" distance (so as to not have unsafe or large gaps and such) it threatens the entire group.

      October 12, 2012

    • Andrew S.

The details will be covered in the pre-ride meeting. Any CMR rider who feels unsure or unsafe is certainly welcome to not continue the ride. And likewise... if we observe an unsafe rider in our group (for whatever reason) we will stop and address the issue. As the Sargeant from Hill Street Blues would say, "Let's all be careful out there!"... to which I add, "...and have fun riding!"

I have been watching the forecast for the last couple of days. In my area (Newark) it is supposed to be tomorrow about 35. That, my friend, is tooooo cold for me. I will check again tomorrow morning. I don't ride when it is in the 30's.
Have fun; the ride should be beautiful with the colors.

Mike, accuweather is saying 10:00 am Grove City to be 49°. The day will hit a high of 73°. I checked Laurelville's temps and they are running 2° higher than Grove City. Layer up for your 40 minute ride to Grove City!

As Ryan mentioned below, we will be breaking this large group into smaller groups. I need volunteers to lead, the only requirement.. you have successfully taken the lead before! Any volunteers?

I think we have enough volunteers to lead and tail! Andy, Andrew, John, Leroy, Bruce if he makes it and me! If we have three groups, I am thinking Leroy, John and I will lead. Andy and Andrew offered tail and Bruce you are an "if" lol! Thanks you guys for stepping up! In the files section of the site I uploaded the turn by turn directions. I am excited! I have a feeling the trees are going to be in their peak color!

Sorry Diane, I have bail. I need to "babysit" some processes early on Saturday. And although it might prove interesting, remoting in from a laptop strapped to my bike may prove to be just a little too much to handle. Looks like it's going to turn into a nice day in the afternoon though, so maybe I'll be able to breath some fresh air later in the day. Enjoy the ride and the colors!

Hey Diane, I'm sure you know I'd love to lead a group through the hills, but I can't verify I'll even make it out based on how this week is going (51 hours of work already, and it's only Wed morning!)-- let alone commit to leading a group. Lisa and I have really missed riding with the group this year. :-( Sorry about that.

http://www.meetup.com/The-Columbus-Motorcycle-Riders-Meetup-Group/files/. Anyone else considering to lead a group?

    October 10, 2012

  • Ryan S.

Depending on the type of ride planned, we may split in to smaller groups as a way to reduce accordion effect and maintain safer riding conditions. On slower, less advanced rides, this doesn't usually happen. The group will arrive to locations at the same time and typically stay together, however this allows riders to get through lights/stop signs without have to play "catch-up" and stopping the entire group. Instead of trying to get one group of 25 bikes though a light, we only have to worry about several at a time without holding up the entire ride.

May I suggest sub-groups with this many riders? (between 6 and 8 per group) It would likely increase safety keep people moving along. ... just a thought.
