Mark your calendars now for our great big annual summer event -- the Vegetarian & Vegan Group Summer Pot Luck Picnic! On Sunday, August 11th, at 12:00pm, both the Vegetarian and Vegan Groups will be getting together (Yay!) for this annual summer tradition! This year our summer picnic will be held in the Northern Shelter at beautiful Highbanks Park! Complete details are provided below:
Date: Sunday, August 11th
Time: 12:00pm. Please arrive by 12:15 and we'll plan to start eating around 12:30pm.
Location:Northern Shelter in Highbanks Park (see directions at the bottom of this announcement). The park area is beautiful with a covered shelter, tons of picnic tables inside and outside, a large open field, adjacent playground, restroom facilities, and nearby parking.
Bring: Please bring the following items with you:
◦Dish to Share: Vegetarian (vegan preferred) main dish, side dish, or dessert to share. To help those with allergies or other dietary concerns, please bring a recipe card/ ingredients list with your dish. Note: If you want to bring a vegan dish and are not sure what's vegan and what's not, here is a good resource: http://www.vegfamily.com/lists/animal-ingredients.htm.
◦Place Setting: Place setting for yourself and each guest (plate, fork, cup, napkin, etc.). We've found this to be a great way to cut down on disposables!
◦Drinks: Beverage(s) for yourself and guest(s).
◦Donation: $1 per individual / $2 per family to cover the cost of the shelter.
◦Optional: Lawn chair, horse shoes, Frisbees, outdoor games, etc.
◦If you know what you’re going to bring, be sure to let us know when you RSVP.
◦Since we have a huge shelter reserved, this will be “rain or shine” event.
This should be a GREAT way to enjoy some summer FUN, a DELICIOUS veggie-friendly summer picnic, and the company of some TERRIFIC folks! Look forward to seeing you there!
P.S. Other Info & Links:
Directions: From I-270, take U.S. 23 north about 3 miles. Entrance is on the left, just before Powell Road. Once you enter the park, the shelter areas will be on your right. Once in the shelter area, we’ll be in the NORTHERN SHELTER. We’ll have our own parking area. http://www.metroparks.net/MapHighbanks.aspx
Highbanks Park:Highbanks is named for its massive 100-foot high shale bluffs that tower over the Olentangy State Scenic River. Tributary streams cutting across the bluff have created a number of deep ravines extending into the eastern part of the park. Ohio and Olentangy shales, often containing outstanding examples of large concretions, are exposed on the bluff face and sides of the ravines. This area has been designated a National Natural Landmark. Visitors will see outstanding examples of oak-hickory, beech-maple and flood plain hardwood forests as they hike the park's 11 miles of trails. Highbanks is also rich in Native American history. The park contains two Adena Indian burial mounds and a prehistoric earthwork. Feel free to stick around after the picnic chat, play, eat some more, to hike and explore this wonderful park!
Northern Shelter:Capacity is 120 and parking is available for 86 cars. Shelter has two large grills, electricity, stone fireplace and wood burning stove, sink with running water, small counter, playground equipment, large playfield, horseshoe pit, volleyball posts (if you have net/equipment, be sure to bring them) and a brick patio. Restroom facilities and a nice playground area are both located nearby.
