November 2012 meetup is the annual Community Thanksgiving Potluck!

  • Nov 18, 2012 · 4:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This year the Vegan Meetup Group will once again be celebrating Thanksgiving with a great big Community Vegan / Vegetarian Thanksgiving Pot-Luck! This year’s Thanksgiving Pot Luck will be FREE to attend! You only need to bring something to share!

What better way to celebrate the season than with new and long-time veg friends from the Columbus community! This event is open to everyone -- whether you are vegetarian, vegan, or just interested in eating more meatless meals. Also, if you attended last year’s “packed to the rafters” event, you’ll be pleased to know we’ve booked an even larger facility, able to accommodate up to 220 guests!

Several groups will be participating in this year’s Thanksgiving Holiday event, including:

  • Columbus Vegan Meetup Group
  • Columbus Vegetarian Meetup Group
  • Dayton Vegan Meetup Group
  • Mercy For Animals
  • Sunrise Sanctuary

Here are complete details:

Date: Sunday, November 18th

Time: Arrive at 4:30pm; Dinner at 5:00pm

Location: St. Timothy’s Parish Hall, 1088 Thomas Lane, Columbus OH 43220 (located off Kenny Rd near Upper Arlington)

Cost: Free! (just bring something to share)

Food: Please bring a vegan side dish and/or dessert to share along with serving utensils and an ingredients list to go with your dish. NO ANIMAL CONTAINING ITEMS please! Fish are animals. Because this is a community-wide event, make sure your dish is vegan so everyone can enjoy. If you need any help on “vegan-izing” your dish, some suggestions can also be found at the bottom of this announcement. If you know what you'll be bringing, be sure to mention it when you RSVP.

Note: If your dish happens to be gluten-free, be sure to indicate this on your ingredients list as we have several gluten-free members!

*If you are a member of both the Vegan and the Vegetarian Meetup groups, please RSVP only under one (1) of the groups.

Place-Setting: To help reduce disposables, please bring a place setting (plate, fork, etc.) for yourself and each guest. You may also wish to bring your own beverage. Water will be provided.

Recipe Substitutions: Soy Milk, Earth Balance, and Vegetable Broth are all quick, easy and tasty substitutes for milk, butter, and broth. Many other vegan recipe substitutions can be found at:

Side Dish Suggestions:

  • Convert one of your favorite side dish or dessert recipes. (Or, better yet, bring one of each!)
  • Bring a traditional Thanksgiving dish: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegan gravy, vegan side dishes, casseroles, rice dishes, salads (veggie, pasta, fruit), etc.
  • Bring a non-traditional Thanksgiving dish: pitas & hummus, ethnic dishes (Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Italian, Greek, etc.), etc.
  • Search the web. Many websites can provide some great recipes. Here's a couple of them: or

This is going to be a wonderful start to the holiday season and an inspiring celebration!

I'm thinking about coming, but I've never been to a Meetup before and the sheer number of people attending is a little daunting! I don't have any vegan (or even vegetarian!) friends in the area though and would love to make some.

Definitely, tera! I have a gluten intolerance so any items people bring which are gluten free I'd be extremely grateful if it was labeled as such!

Would like to ask a small favor... I have a severe peanut allergy, if anyone is bringing a peanut dish would you mind labeling it so I know not to try? If there are any others with serious allergies please let us know and we can do the same. Thanks!

This will be my first meetup with this group I can actually make, so I'm very excited. I have slowly been converting over to vegan for about a year now, with my hubby making the transition pretty rough. Are people going to be including recipes of their dishes, so we can recreate it if we like it? I have a handful of "tried and true" dishes so far that my whole family enjoys, but I like to try things before investing in all the ingredients. I will print off some slips of paper with my recipe on it. Hopefully a bunch of you can do the same? I'd love to add to the vegan dishes my husband likes :-)

I'm going to miss seeing everyone at this wonderful event, but I am leaving town on the 16th to spend time with family in Omaha.

Michael, I believe that the location (which I won't reveal now) for this year's community potluck has already been set, and the goal was to find a space that would accommodate the record attendance we had last year. Sorry for jumping in here. I just wanted to share that while Jennifer hasn't made the "official" announcement yet, Jennifer and other organizers are making the arrangements and details will be revealed soon.
