Family-Style Vegetarian Group Thanksgiving Potluck

Back by popular demand -- the Columbus Vegetarian Group Family-Style Thanksgiving Potluck!  Here are the details for this event:

DATE:  Sunday, Nov 10, 2013

TIME: Arrive between 12:00 and 12:15.  We’ll start eating at 12:30pm.

LOCATION:  We’ll be getting together in the Beech-Maple Lodge at Blacklick Woods Metro Park.  The lodge is beautiful and is equipped with heating, air conditioning, a gas fireplace, tables, chairs and a large enough meeting space to host 50-60 folks comfortably.  The lodge also features plenty of nearby parking and a full kitchen with a sink, refrigerator, stove, and plenty of counter space.  Directions can be found at the link at the bottom of this e-mail.

WHAT TO BRING

• Side Dish and/or Dessert to Share:  Please bring a vegetarian (vegan preferred) main or side dish to share.  If you can, please also bring a dessert so we have plenty to go around!  With your dish, be sure to also include a recipe card (for those with allergies) and serving utensils. If your dish happens to be gluten-free, be sure to mention it as we have several gluten-free members as well.

• Place Setting & Beverage:  Please bring a place setting (plate, eating utensils, napkins, etc.) and beverage for yourself and each of your guests.

• $2 Per Person:  Please bring a donation of $2 per person to cover the cost of the shelter ($100).

RSVP:  We'll have an RSVP limit of 50 for this event, so please only RSVP if you plan to attend.  If your plans change, please be sure to update your RSVP no later than 48-hours before the event so that others may attend!

This should be a great start to the holiday season and a wonderful veg celebration together!  Hope you can join us!

Dan

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Directions:

• Blacklick Woods Metro Park is located at 6975 E. Livingston Ave, Reynoldsburg OH 43068.

• From I-270, take the East Main Street/Reynoldsburg exit. Go east (outside the loop) on Main Street to Brice Road and turn right. Take Brice Road to Livingston Avenue and turn left. Entrance is about 1.5 miles on the right.

Food Info:

• All vegetarian dishes are welcome (and veggie versions of traditional Thanksgiving favorites are VERY welcome).  However, because our group is about half-vegetarian/half-vegan, Vegetarian Group members are encouraged to make their dish vegan so everyone can enjoy.

• In general, Soy Milk, Earth Balance, and Vegetable Broth are all quick, easy and tasty substitutes for milk, butter and broth. Many other vegan recipe substitutions can be found at: http://www.veganwolf.com/vegan_cooking_substitutions.htm

• For further info on what's vegan and what's not, click here: http://www.vegfamily.com/lists/animal-ingredients.htm

Side Dish Suggestions:

•  Convert one of your favorite side dish or dessert recipes.

• Bring a traditional Thanksgiving dish: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, veggie gravy, veggie side dishes, casseroles, rice dishes, salads, etc.

• Bring a non-traditional Thanksgiving dish: pitas & hummus, ethnic dishes, etc.

• Search the web. Many websites can provide some great recipes. Here's one of them: http://www.vegancoach.com/vegan-side-dish.html.

If anyone's looking for something to do on T-giving itself, I'd be open to getting together at a vegan-friendly restaurant if anything's open...I've even looked into volunteer options for that day since I'll be alone otherwise but haven't found any.

I'm so glad that Mark and I showed up and insisted on sharing our food. There were some of us who just shared our veg food on a nearby table. Thanks, Dan for organizing the event. Big thatnks to all who refused to leave until some food was eaten!

I want to apologize to everyone for the last minute cancellation of our Thanksgiving Pot Luck. Very disappointing for me and I know it was for you. I know many of you took the time to prepare the always wonderful dishes we have for these events. I'll follow up with the park to figure out what happened this week but for now, I just want to again apologize for the disappointment and inconvenience. We won't be able to reschedule this event but I look forward to seeing you at some of the other upcoming events.

    November 10, 2013

  • Nicole

Is there any chance of rescheduling this event? I look forward to this event all year. I'm so sad I might just eat all fifty peanut butter oatmeal cookies that I planned on sharing with all of you!

    2 · November 10, 2013

    • Sharmila

Do peanut butter oatmeal cookies freeze well? Those sound yummy - keep some for us for the next event :)

      2 · November 10, 2013

  • Sharmila

I was about to get in the car with my kids, but got the email in time - good timing :)
As disappointed as we were initially, 'everything happens for a reason', and I'm looking forward to the next vegetarian meet up with this group.

P.S. Now we'll be having a family picnic and visiting the Columbus Museum of Art instead ;)

I am so sorry but there was a mix up in scheduling and we do not have the shelter house today. I am afraid we are going to have to cancel todays pot luck. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience.

That sucks. I was actually really nervous to come and wasn't going to. But at the last second I decided to suck it up and come so me and my mom were rushing around getting some last minute food. We even snatched a fork and knife at SAMs club ;).

UPDATE: The RSVP list for this event has officially been closed. I apologize to those still on the waiting list and appreciate your interest in attending! For this event, we are limited by the size of the facility. According to the MetroParks staff, there is comfortable seating for 50-55, so even with any last minute cancellations, we anticipate being at capacity. Thanks again and look forward to seeing you at some of the other upcoming events.

when will you know if those on the waitlist can get in so we will have time to buy and make food or know not to buy food.

Dan- will there be power strips/extension cords to plug a crock pot into or should I bring one along?
    Thanks!

    3 · November 8, 2013

    • Dan

Thanks, Chef Mark! Sounds tasty! I'll see if I can bring some disposable bowls too. For the power cord, if you can, please try to bring one along. I'll try to bring some as well....but just in case I forget, you'll be covered! (Along with the soup that I'm looking forward to trying! :-)

Hi David & Robin! Thanks for the suggestion! That place is new to me -- I'll have to try it out and see if it might work for a future event. Thanks so much for the suggestion! :-)

I hope to join if the waiting list diminishes! I'm a bit shy and will be alone since I'm single and don't really have friends here yet, so will there be seating for those of us who come alone and are really shy?

    1 · October 22, 2013

    • Dan

Hi Aporia! Usually we're able to clear out the wait list before events -- unfortunately, it's pretty long this time, so I'm not sure if it will? If not, we'll definitely look forward to meeting you soon. Take care & look forward to meeting you.

      October 23, 2013

    • Priya

There are several single (and shy) folks here. I'm one of them. But I never feel uncomfortable at the meetups since people are so warm and friendly. We can choose our own seat. Even for longtime members, each meetup is an opportunity to meet new people and make friends. :-)

I think I just made somebody on the waitlist very happy. I had to change my RSVP to No. I'm volunteering at a race that morning, and I don't want to risk being a no show to the potluck. Enjoy the day, everybody!

    2 · October 28, 2013

  • Neha S.

Hi all... I'm interested in meeting you all at the upcoming meetup event if you're still accepting RSVPs. Let me know. Thanks.

    September 30, 2013

    • Dan

Hi Neha! Thanks for the note. Yes, you should definitely get on the waiting list for this event! Spaces almost always open up before the event. It looks like the waiting list was out of whack. I just fixed it and went ahead and added you to it. Once a space opens up, you'll receive an e-mail. If you have any other questions, just let me know. Look forward to meeting you.
