About the Movie:
(R) (99 min) The film that made Simon Pegg a star and a hero among geeks expertly infuses horror with comedy, which isn't as easy as it looks. Pegg and director/co-writer Edgar Wright draw upon a wealth of cinematic history – from the obvious George Romero's zombie movies to Aliens and An American Werewolf in London – in much the same way as their earlier television series Spaced. Pegg and Wright carefully sprinkle the first act with setups that are dutifully (and often humorously) paid off later, like the background players who are later seen as zombies and the shots of Shaun's daily routine, which are repeated and slightly altered after the outbreak. You may not catch all of them all on the first viewing, but it's that tight structure and attention to detail make the film so much fun to watch again and again. Ultimately, Shaun of the Dead may not always be laugh-out-loud funny or terrifyingly scary, but it is a well-crafted horror comedy with a genuine appeal to fans of both genres.
