Sounds like you had a good time. I plan on joining you guys on the next cold weather trip.

      February 22, 2014

  • Marcie

If it weren't for the colder than expected weather, this would have been a five star camping weekend. The four over night campers (David, Liway, Mark and I) and then Tim who spent the day and evening on Saturday around the campfire, all shared food, lots of drink, story telling, jokes, camaraderie, laughing our butts off, etc. David and Mark were nice enough to give fishing lessons to Liway. And the truck load of firewood was a blessing. A good time was had by all.

Thank you, Kim, for getting this info. You are right, the reservation people don't seem to know a whole lot. I appreciate you confirming that it's open, because I was really looking forward to camping this weekend.

      1 · February 11, 2014

  • Kim

I just went to the website and this is what is written there: " Campground 1 is open year-round with water available April 15 through Oct. 15. Campgrounds 2 and 3 are open from April 15 through Oct. 31 (with water available). Campground 4 and Campground 5 are open Feb. 25 through Oct. 31 (with water available)." I am not certain how much the reservation folks know about the individual parks, I have never gotten the impression they even live in MO when I have called. I do know they do not take reservations during the "off" season. However, I am just relaying information.... I would try to contact the actual Park Office and see what they say. I will try to find a number for you... they normally have regular office hours, and maybe someone can call tomorrow during the day.

    February 11, 2014

  • Marcie

I just got off the phone with the MO State Park reservation line (to reserve for Meramec in June), and she checked and swears that Bennett Springs is NOT OPEN at all this weekend. They apparently don't open until Feb 25th. Where did the information come from that Campground 1 is open? I really don't want to drive 163 miles and find out I can't get into the campsite.

    1 · February 11, 2014

    • Liway (say: L.

I agree! I even have a dog in tow. Not to mention that there's 10 of us who's supposed to meet there! We need to confirm this ASAP.

  • Marcie

And I called the store number, and their recording says it's catch and release fishing only, and the regular fishing season opens March 1. Hmmm. There is no one answering at the store until Friday.

I have not camped at Bennett in 30 years. Has it changed much? I'll get a map and if somebody can give me an idea of where to land, I'll stake claim to as real estate as possible. Also, what are the weather parameters? don't go if it's gonna be below.......at night??

Just as a heads-up, please remember your fishing license if you intend to fish. You will also need the additional state-wide trout stamp to fish in the river. You can buy these at the store in the park.

FIREWOOD: As of Saturday night, it looks like there are four of us who want to buy firewood: Me, Liway, David Runde, and Mark Landgraf. If anyone else wants some, please let me know ASAP, but at the latest, by 7AM Monday morning. I'll be calling the woodlot on Monday to confirm our order, and will get less if we don't need the full truckload, but it does look like it will be cold and having the truckload will be beneficial to all of us. Liway, I don't do Paypal, and I'm okay with collecting cash at the campsite.

  • Marcie

Okay, as of now, Friday night, 2/7/14, there are ten members signed up to camp. Will you (the ten) agree to split the $125? That would be $12.50 each. If more people drop out of the camping trip, that may go up, but considering that the small bundles inside the camp normally sell for around $6 or $7, this may be a better way to go. I talked to the guy at the woodlot today and he said the $125 truck load is about the same as a cord. We can put some aside for a big bonfire on Saturday night, like we normally do, then split the rest for use at our individual campsites. Could I get those of you who are signed up to weigh in, and let me know if you are in agreement? I'm going to call the wood lot on Monday to confirm the order. Thanks.

I'm still going. I have a space heater for my tent and just ordered a heated mattress pad for my air mattress. Hoping it arrives in time. Anyway, it looks like the low temps at night will be around 30 or so. Not too terribly bad. Has anyone else looked at the camp sites? I'm thinking we should try to get the row of sites by the frost free water, bathrooms and shower house, numbered from 129 to 139. Any opinions?

Host? How does one Host? If I calculate correctly, I should get there between about 1:00 and 2:00. Look for a BIG RED Suburban. What's the protocol on firewood and what time is the cocktail hour?

      1 · February 4, 2014

  • Kim

There appears to be no host.... Although there really doesn't need to be one, if everyone is okay with it, that is more than fine. If anyone wants to step up and be the host I will be happy to make them one. Giving the location of where one or more of you think you might be would be helpful to those who have never camped with us before. Please let me know your decision... thanks :) Also, please remember to change your rsvps if you decide not to go, so those going will know who to look for and of course, not to end up there alone. not too fun in the middle of winter. ;)

    1 · February 3, 2014

  • Liway (say: L.

Hmmm. I'm vacillating between going and not going because of the cold and I don't think my dog still remembers how to camp in the cold. But I saw that this weekend's (14-16) temps in Lebanon MO are between 51 and 30. There should be electricity there, right? Enough electricity for several heaters?????

Alpine shop can give you good advice and their prices are not high. I got a tent on clearance for less than the big box stores.

      January 31, 2014

    • Bill J.

I was on line and Dick's Sporting goods has a clearance sale going on line, clearance prices and the 40% off of that, I ordered a $200 tent for $81. It was rated 5 out of 5 by three out of three people that rated it. I hope it is as good as they say!
