Comics are brilliant. They are also an overlooked and under-appreciated part of the literary establishment, so we're looking to redress the balance a little.

The group works pretty much like a traditional book club - we pick a new graphic novel or collection every month, read it and meet up for a discussion with a beer or two. I bring some questions that may or may not get answered - it doesn't really matter.

We try to find the literary corners of the graphic storytelling medium, so we're interested in things like how art style informs character perception; how panel layouts inform pacing; we examine the moments when superheroes do some genuine soul-searching; we look at unsettling indie comics and ask what they're saying. We don't shy away from the mainstream - there's plenty of us who love a bit of Batman (we also love him remade as a communist icon) but we will at all costs avoid bland, knuckle-dragging characters with nothing to say, in favor of deep, cleverly-drawn characters and great narrative. (Or really good explosions.)

The Comic Book Club is open to all comic readers, creators, writers and illustrators, as well as to anyone who has never even read a graphic novel before but has perhaps secretly stolen a glance at that colorful forbidden shelf in the library erroneously labeled 'teen fiction'. We're a friendly bunch, and, for good or ill, we generally favor outspoken opinion over actual knowledge. Welcome!
