This project is run by Conservation Volunteers New Zealand. Porirua Harbour is undergoing restoration and enhancement as part of the Harbour and Catchment Strategy and Action Plan. This initiative will see saltwater wetland and saltmarsh areas restored to help improve water quality. This estuary is important habitat for migratory and resident birds and fish and is recognised as a fish nursery for species including Kahawai, Snapper and sand flounder. Today we will be identifying and removing noxious woody weeds such as gorse, karo and evergreen buckthorn at the mouth of Onepoto stream to improve the native integrity. Come lend a hand alongside Whitireia international students. Please wear sturdy footwear (gumboots recommended), long pants, long sleeved top. Please bring lunch, drink and wet weather gear if needed. If you would like a lift from Wellington or Porirua let me know.
