Founded by President Deborah Howard in 1992, the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) is the only national nonprofit
organization dedicated exclusively to protecting companion animals from cruelty in pet shops and puppy mills. CAPS actively
addresses the abuse and suffering of pet shop and puppy mill dogs through investigations, education, media relations,
legislative involvement, puppy mill dog rescues, consumer assistance and pet industry employee relations.
What is a puppy mill? A PUPPY MILL is a mass breeding facility that breeds for "profit," and not for sustaining the quality of a particular breed. Breeding dogs live their entire lives in cages often witout human contact, without touching the ground, without exercise, without protection from the elements and the list goes on and on. It is extraordinary animal cruelty and it is legal. PUPPY MILLS are regulated by the USDA, but there are not enough inspectors to cover the mass numbers of mills in the US, so the abuse goes relatively unchecked. Regulations to protect these animals fall under the federal Animal Welfare Act, a bare-bones bit of rules that would shock any reasonable, thinking person. To address the relatively "non-existant" oversight of the wholesale and resale of dogs, our group is actively pursuing legislation to assist in ending this nightmare!
Our group protested Petworks Pet store in La Mesa beginning in January of 2009. We were there every Saturday to raise awareness in the community that, "If you buy a dog from a pet store, you are aiding and abetting horrific animal cruelty! So please don't SHOP, ADOPT!" If you don't believe me, just ask the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA!
THE CITY OF LA MESA LISTENED AND PET WORKS CLOSED ITS DOORS JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2010! We also introduced an Ordinance proposal to the City of La Mesa that would prohibit the sale of puppy mill puppies in retail stores.
We are currently in front of PUPS & PETS in Santee! We have protested this store since January of
2011, and will be there every Saturday until the store owner either goes humane, or closes his doors!
PLEASE HELP SAVE A DOGS LIFE AND JOIN OUR WONDERFUL GROUP! IT WILL HELP HEAL YOUR HURT WHEN YOU CONTEMPLATE THIS "ABSURD REALITY" AS YOU ARE ACTUALLY MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
