Economic Growth: Problem or Panacea? – Documentary Movie & Discussion

This is not a Concord Area Humanist event but is likely of interest to CAH members.

“I have thought about that, but hadn’t realized anyone else had”.

You hear it on the news. You hear it from the government officials we elect. You hear it from corporations. You hear it from most mainstream economists. It is pervasive.

Growth. Perpetual growth. Never ending growth. That is said to be the way to solve our most pressing environmental, social, economic and political problems. Growth is a mantra, a religion, a belief system.

But is it true?

Economic, consumption and population growth are overwhelming all that conservation, renewable energy, and technology might do. More and more, climate change experts are writing of the devastating impact of this overarching issue. Growth is preventing us from solving so many of our problems like sprawl, climate change, water, energy, dying oceans, loss of habitat and diversity, pollution, stress, community, traffic trauma, and heaps of trash. Growth overwhelms all else we do to enhance quality of life, economic fairness, and even our democracy! Is growth really the silver bullet?

Come see a dramatic and riveting new documentary that shakes our common assumptions to the core with dramatic out-of-the-box conversation, analysis and thinking. It is a 55 minute award winning feature film, by gifted producer Dave Gardner, which holds up a mirror to our culture, our values and our daily behavior.

“Growthbusters: Hooked on Growth” is a non-profit documentary examining what may be the most critical issue of our time: the unsustainability of our society’s addiction to growth everlasting.

The movie and discussion are free. For a taste, see Led by Mike Hanauer .

Sunday, November 17 at 7:00 pm, at First Parish Church, Needham, MA.
