You hear it on the news. You hear it from the government officials we elect. You hear it from corporations. You hear it from most mainstream economists. It is pervasive.
Growth. Perpetual growth. Never ending growth. That is said to be the way to solve our most pressing environmental, social, economic and political problems. Growth is a mantra, a religion, a belief system.
But is it true?
Economic, consumption and population growth are overwhelming all that conservation, renewable energy, and technology might do. More and more, climate change experts are writing of the devastating impact of this overarching issue. Growth is preventing us from solving so many of our problems like sprawl, climate change, water, energy, dying oceans, loss of habitat and diversity, pollution, stress, community, traffic trauma, and heaps of trash. Growth overwhelms all else we do to enhance quality of life, economic fairness, and even our democracy! Is growth really the silver bullet?
