Manufacturing 101: Making Your Product. For Real

Join us for a discussion on Manufacturing 101.

Topic Overview

You’re ready to start manufacturing your product! You’ve built prototypes and are ready to commercialize it, now what?

• What are the resources you need to go into production?

• What does your supply chain look like?

• How do you find the right factories?

Panelists

Join us for a panel discussion with Susan Liang, Founder of Asulia Foods, Shannon Whitehead, Founder of Factory45 and Mike Langone, Founder of HopBox.

Asulia Foods make all natural, handcrafted fusion plant-based foods packed with nutrient-dense veggies, superfoods and flavor. They believe in the transformative power of nutrition and education.

Factory 45 is a new accelerator program that gives independent makers the resources to start sustainable businesses in the USA. Shannon co-founded {r}evolution apparel, a sustainable clothing company that was the highest-funded fashion project in Kickstarter history at that time.

HopBox make homebrewing kits that are designed to help you brew in style. Every aspect of brewing is provided for, from quality glassware to the durable, highly-portable handcrafted wooden base. They are currently crushing it in their Kickstarter campaign!

Questions to Consider

• How do you take your final prototype through to manufacturing?

• What are all of the components involved in the manufacturing process?

• Where are you going to source your products?

• How do you approach suppliers and factories?

• What do you need to look for and consider in your suppliers and factories?

This was by far the best session of this group. Though the location wasn't the best to drive to during rush hour traffic the facility at Grommet was very inspiring. The topic we covered was incredibly interesting and it was great to see the community discuss topics with the panelists further than the standard answer/reply format. This group pressed for further clarification etc. While I think this panel probably weren't as knowledgable as previous panels, where they were able to add context via personal experiences, we're quite insightful and riddled with nuggets of wisdom. Looking forward to the next meeting soon!

It was great to hear the panelists talk about their struggles and hear their suggestions. I also had some great conversations, learned a few things and hopefully passed on a useful tip or tow.

It was a very informative session and I learned some new things related to resourcing, packaging, and business relationships. Would have liked to talk with people from The Grommet after the session. Would have liked info on parking before the event. Not from the area, it took me 2 hrs to get there from the south shore, and it was all permit parking only at the location. I stumbled upon meter parking and the bike path with the hole in the fence..

Hi Laurie, Thanks for coming! Good to hear from you and thank you for your feedback. The parking situation should have been explained further. I forget how many people commute in (I'm so accustomed to Boston/Cambridge/Somerville travelers who use public transport) that I forget a bit about parking. Will certainly provide more information next time!

I thought the meet-up was fantastic!!. I got some very useful information on setting up my business and where to go to get answers. I LOVE the concept of Grommet and would have appreciated more information the company. I'm older than most of the people that attended and I'm a visual learner as opposed to a virtual learner. I would really appreciate a 10 minute PowerPoint at the beginning. Also, there were a great deal of resources that were discussed last night and many names and resources were mentioned. Are these available on the Grommet website? Are people available to discuss ideas individually at Grommet? Is there a contact list?

I honestly can't wait for the next meeting. I'm really looking forward to it.

Hey J G, Thanks for coming last night and glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate all of your feedback and will certainly take it into consideration for future events. Regarding The Grommet, I worked there (today is my last day), so please send me your website and contact information. I also encourage you to submit to your Citizen's Gallery: http://www.thegrommet.... Given the volume of products we review, it's difficult to have special one-on-one consultations, but we'll see what we can do.

Yes I should be able to record on my iPad and send it for distribution.

I can't make it due to a prior commitment. I hope this gets recorded and posted someplace, because I could really use this information.

    • Aaron

Okay! We'll see what we can do. Does anyone in the group have experience in recording events?

I won't be able to make this one-- but look forward to hearing what was discussed! Catch everyone at the next one!
