After the destruction of the Black Hawk Helicarrier, S.H.I.E.L.D. is mired in a bureaucratic red tape-laden investigation of how and why S.H.I.E.L.D. security protocols failed, resulting in hundreds of lost lives and the destruction of a multi-billion dollar flying aircraft carrier. S.H.I.E.L.D. is ramping up security on the other S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarriers and other major S.H.I.E.L.D. installations, and as a result of this, and recent government budget cuts, they have had to scale back their terrorist surveillance program. Advanced Idea Mechanics was one of these terrorist organizations that was being surveilled. But due to the recent inactivity of A.I.M. and the security upgrades at strategic S.H.I.E.L.D. strongholds, the bureaucrats at S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ have decided to pull the plug on the surveillance operation against A.I.M.
Unknown to S.H.I.E.L.D., A.I.M.is anything but inactive. M.O.D.O.K. has set up a secret base of operations on an uncharted remote island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The top A.I.M. scientists have been working on a foreboding, death-dealing biological weapon unlike this world has ever seen. Known as the Z-Virus, this biological entity would turn entire armies on the battlefield into brain-dead legions of worthless troops. The virus attacks the brain and central nervous system, shutting down the motor skills of a person and taking away all cognition such as mental functions, mental processes (thoughts), and all intelligence. Eventually, the victim would succumb to starvation or exposure to the elements as he lurches and lumbers for the remaining few weeks of life.
However, something has gone horrendously wrong at the A.I.M. laboratory. A S.O.S. distress signal was partially sent before the mysterious messenger was abruptly cut short. S.H.I.E.L.D. intercepted this queer message. The fragmentary message comprised of a set of longitude and latitude coordinates and something about the “walking dead”, and something about a vaccine.
S.H.I.E.L.D. has asked various super-hero teams to investigate this small island and to report back. Your team has been one of the chosen to go on this mission.
The nation of Latveria also intercepted the distress call. Victor von Doom has assembled a group of scientists to be escorted by a few teams of super-villains as bodyguards, and have been ordered to bring back any findings. Will your group obey Dr. Doom’s orders and investigate this distress call?
