Camassia Natural Area in West Linn

This is a beautiful spot awash in blue camas at the height of blooming season now. There are many other wildflowers as well in an oak-madrona woodland. It's mostly flat with good trails. There is, however, poison oak, so cover arms and legs.

The little whitish wild lily, Erythronium oregonum, grows wild, sometimes in great quantities in the Coast Range. One of my favorites!
I'm curious to know the names of the plant with the small pink clusters of flowers and the larger, white flowering plant (still not blooming). Any ideas?

Check the photos. I commented the names under the ones I could find identified online.

Interesting link about identifying poison oak: http://walking.about.com/od/medfirstaid/ig/Poison-Oak-Photos/ According to the article, it imitates the look of plants growing nearby, so is variable in appearance. Clever stuff!

Perhaps the slender leaved trillium that we saw on our hike was Trillium chloropetalum, photo at: http://www.portlandnursery.com/plants/images/trillium/trillium_chloropetalum.jpg
    Any other possibilities?

Very pleasant afternoon exploring a magical setting. A little more advance planning would have been nice. Thanks for adjusting the meeting time.

Terrific walk. I had no idea there was such a place up there and I lived in the area for 14 years. I really enjoyed meeting you all as well

I just called the high school and confirmed that it's OK for us to park there on Sunday. The climb is steeper to get up to the natural area, but that's the price we pay for parking :-)

FYI, the TriMet #35 bus stops pretty close to the high school

Sorry to have missed you - I thought that I knew where it was but didnt

My thought is that we meet in the south parking lot at West Linn High School. There is a trailhead there. It's an uphill climb from there, but at least there's parking.

Does your link above give directions to where we're going to meet or will be meeting somewhere else? If so, directions, please. I'm unfamiliar with the area. Thanks!

The High School sounds good -- we'll need more parking.

Sounds like a really scenic walk. May bring 1 or 2 with me, if that's ok.

Linda, are you willing to change it to 1:00 or 2:00?

    April 20, 2013

    • Linda

Yes. How about 1:30 p.m. instead. I did post this proposed change somewhere, but not sure if it came through.

1:30 won't work for me. Breaks up the day.

Is there parking at the meeting place you've suggested? If not, I know another place we can start from that has parking.

    April 20, 2013

    • Linda

There's not much parking. Does the alternative start point go through the same area??

      April 20, 2013

  • Gretchen

I'd love to attend but have a commitment for 11:00. If it were at 1:00 I could attend.

I really want to see this, but can't do Sunday mornings!

Wow are you psychic or what? Or were you at the last hike when I declare my intention of visiting this spot?
