Signs of Spring on the Willamette

This 3.5 mile loop starts under the Hawthorne Bridge on the east side of the river, goes down the Eastbank Esplanade to the Steel Bridge, then crosses to the west bank where the cherry blossoms are at their peak. We may decide to check out Saturday market and grab a snack, before continuing south to the Hawthorne Bridge and crossing back to our point of origin.

There is parking on and around SE Salmon Street. Dogs are welcome.

Didn't see anyone around Vera Katz, so I had a nice walk alone in the rain.

We were at the statue from 9:50-10:10am, don't know how we missed you unless there are multiple statues! Sorry about that, Carl!

I actually was under the bridge at 10 looking for the group but unfortunately didn't find you. I'm visiting from the East Coast so please forgive me my disorientation...

The east side or the west (downtown) side of the bridge? I looked for people at 10 under the east side of the Hawthorne Bridge. The Vera Katz statue was a couple blocks north of there...

So sorry, Su, something has come up. (Not too thrilled about the weather this morning, either...I'm just getting over a nasty cold and don't want to chance it. )

Was hoping for a dry morning. Will join you for the next one.

Is it okay if I bring my grandson? He's 10, well-behaved, and certainly capable of doing the walk...

      Sure

I need to get an earlier start, so hiking on my own this morning. Catch you next time!

So sorry I am not able to attend my first event after all.

    April 4, 2014

  • Emily M

I'm sad this would have been my first time coming to a group event but I seemed to have triple booked myself tomorrow morning...putting things in my calendar would be a great idea - if only I'd follow through with it. hope to make it to the next one!

So sorry to cancel -- I am sick and don't want to cough on anyone -- haven't been on a walk with you for a very long time and I wanted to get started again -- will try to join the next time!

Need to weed my garden tomorrow and move some plants. Hopefully the next hike I can join you.

Very disappointed; unfortunately this is my Saturday to work

Well, last hike I ignored the weather forecast and we had rain and only 4 people showed up. Trying to outguess Portland weather is an exercise in futility. /:-)

Can't make it on the 5th, have an all day workshop up in Seattle. I will be at the Clinton Street at 4pm for the film, if anyone is able to join me on the originally scheduled date.

If it's raining we will not be dismayed. If it is absolutely pouring we will reschedule to next Saturday. Keep an eye on the site tomorrow for updates.

      Flooding could be an issue...

I'll be there unless there's another monsoon next week!

And I was all ready to bring a boat! Oh, well. Can't make it next week. Have fun, all!

Things are starting to look grim for tomorrow's weather. Not only rain, but wind. I think we should postpone this hike to next Saturday.

Bring your dog by all means but leave any bears at home :-)

I'm planning to walk Saturday at 10am but am also interested in company to the 4pm showing of "A Birder's Guide to Everything" at the Clinton Street Theater. Let me know if any of you would be up for that. We could have dinner in the neighborhood after the movie.

    March 26, 2014

    • susanith

I might be interested, Barbara. Let me check out my schedule and further details on program.

I'm still fairly new to Portland, and took a long streetcar ride to OMSI from downtown, before I realized I could walk to it! So I know how to get to OMSI and the east end of Hawthorne Bridge, but I don't know where around there the Vera Katz statue is.
Could you give me some walking directions from OMSI or the stairs that go down from the eastbound bridge bus stop? (At least Iknow where those are.)
    Thank you!

    March 26, 2014

    • Pam B

Going North from OMSI pass under the Hawthorne Bridge following the path. Vera Katz Statue is on the left sitting on a bench.
