Sourdough Trail: Brainard Lake

  • Nov 10, 2013 · 12:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Lets hike the Sourdough Trail, we will hike for 1 1/5 hrs then stop for a 45 minute break for meditation time and then make the return hike back to our vehicles.

We will leave the trail head at precisely 12pm, this is a contemplative/silent hike!

This sign will now be on the lead vehicle so you can easily find the group!

The Sourdough Trail drops gently in a luxuriant sub alpine forest to St Vrain Creek and the St Vrain Creek Trail split (1.15 miles : 9,732'). Note that some older map depictions of this junction are not to scale. The downhill grade moderates to the first of two Wapiti Trail access points, a winter use-only trail.

The Sourdough bends northeast to a large meadow and pond with good views of Niwot Ridge and several iconic summits of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area (2.0 miles : 9,712'). This boggy, aspen-studded area is a good place to find moose, elk, deer, and bear. A steep grade resumes through lodgepole to a break with views of St Vrain Mountain and the Beaver Reservoir basin ( 2. 5 miles : 9,566')

Sourdough TH:  From Nederland, travel seven miles north on Colorado Highway (CO) 72. Turn west onto gravel National Forest System Road (NFSR) 298, signed as the turnoff for the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station. A parking area is not far on the left

Sorry I had to miss! I was out with a sore throat. I am new to Denver, from Atlanta, and am realizing I had better educate myself on hiking this time of year. Just read a couple of comments and realize I don't know what kind of gear I should realistically possess. I'll be looking up YaxTrax and on the look out for a pair of snow shoes. Hope to join you soon!

Yak Track is good for fresh or beaten down snow. But if it gets icy Micro Spike is better, although, fresh snow tends to stick to spikes.

My roommate and I didn't find the group but parked at the GPS coordinates helpfully provided and we went on happily to a wonderful contemplative walk through snow and conifers. We left our YaxTrax in the car, not seeing the snow til the trail, which was almost completely covered in snow and learned: never leave the Yaxtrax in the car (as well as, isn't it high time I got crosscountry skis or snowshoes?

I apologize for holding you up and making you wonder. We learned next time we'll follow the directions as given instead of taking alternate route. But let me tell you that alternate route, up Left Hand Canyon drive, was astonishing: amazing to see the flood damage--half a dozen places the river ate half the road, another half dozen places it had to have swept right through houses. Massively powerful, very memorable, intimidating.

I liked the tree lined path. It would be a cool place to visit summer time, which I will revisit. Good idea, Marcie. Thank you, Kathy for organizing it.

I suggested this trail. Yep would have been better had there been views as a beautiful day. And the hiking companions were awesome. Thanks

It would make the most sense Marillen to meet us at C470 & Morrison rd. C470 and Quebec is south and east of your location and would double your travel time.

Hi Chong! I am new to Colorado. What is DDC area? Carpooling might be what makes this possible for me.

Do you mean DTC as in Denver Tech Center area? Chong I meet you recently on another hike. Perhaps we can do some stretching during the meditation time.

Hi, I agree with checking on the weather/ amount of snow. This time of year we could need snowshoes! I live in Louisville and can accommodate 3 extra people if needed.

    November 4, 2013

  • Mary

suggest you check late this week for snow/ice amounts and bring traction devices for boots if necessary
