Morning at Gem Lake-Estes Park

Rescheduled from an earlier date that got rained/stormed out:

This is a moderate hike due to the short distance up to the lake (less than 2 miles), combined with a bit of an incline as there's 1000 ft of elevation gain. As you climb up to the lake, you'll get magnificent views of Estes Park and RMNP. The lake itself is surrounded by lumpy rock formations and some trees. Since this is a short distance hike, we'll spend a little extra time at the lake to unwind, journal, take pictures, meditate or socialize - about an hour or so.

We'll meet at the trailhead (see directions below) at 9 am and depart for the hike at 9:15 am. If you're late, catch up! We'll see you up top.

Carpooling is encouraged! Please message each other to set it up.

DISTANCE: Less than 4 miles roundtrip, 1000 ft elevation gain, approximately 3 hours on the trail if you count the "chilling" time at the lake.

DIRECTIONS: From Estes Park, take the US Hwy 34 bypass (the road that goes by the Stanley Hotel). Just west of the Stanley, turn right (north) onto MacGregor Avenue (CR 43). The road makes a hard right at the entrance to MacGregor Ranch, after which it is known as the Devils Gulch Rd. Veer right, and proceed about 3/4 miles to Lumpy Ridge Rd. Turn left onto Lumpy Ridge Rd. The Lumpy Ridge Trailhead and parking area at the end of the road.

DONATION: $2 to the organizer to cover MeetUp fees and gas. There is no fee to park at this trailhead.

CANCELLATIONS: Check this website before you head out to see that this hike is still scheduled. I will send an email to all who RSVP yes to let them know of changes and if this is canceled it will disappear off the schedule! Severe weather, wildfires, flash flood watches or warnings, thunderstorms, are all reasons why this could be canceled.

Something to "Contemplate"... the Principle here IS Loving... Giving... Sharing... Communing... Margaret and the others that lead these groups do that from the Heart or they Wouldn't be doing this... it's a lot of time, responsibility, and work... That is the "Nature of the group"... the fee is also stated up front... $2... who Really could have Any Kind of Issue with such a Minimal amount? Seriously??? I'm with Diane... I'm Blown Away by this...

I am blown away that you even raise this issue about money. Meetups are incredibly fun, a bargain if you ask me. If you dont "understand" the fee maybe this isnt a good place for you...

Peace, Bethany. Again, it's not the dollar amount that is being earned, it's the principle. It wasn't advertised as that kind of meetup.

If everyone knows a little is being made on the side by the leader, that's totally cool. It's just that there are many hiking meetups where the leaders do all that for no money.

Certainly didn't mean to offend & get all these feathers ruffled, just trying to understand the nature of the group.

And Margaret goes on Her Own Time with no pay to scout out all these hikes... It really seems quite unfair that they Don't make a little money for giving us good leadership and great places to go... and $30? If everyone actually shows up... she's Not going to get Rich doing this! I am grateful for all those Willing to offer this to us... it's $2... seriously???

Meetup isn't necessarily a free service to participants. I am a member of the hiking group Denver Trailheads and they charge $2 for hikes for example. Some groups charge an annual fee to members, like Adventurous Women. Organizers want to at least recoup their monthly fees if not their time & expenses for gas, park fees, etc. Just letting you know that each group is different.

    July 22, 2012

  • Margaret

Yes Jennifer, it means that I don't get reimbursed for the $12/mo Meetup organizer fees because I don't get enough participants, or not everyone pays because it's a donation, or I don't schedule enough hikes during the month. I don't usually carpool because my family rides along many times and/or people don't give me gas money each time. So I pay out more in time, energy, gas, park fees, and meetup fees than I get reimbursed. I'm losing money.

Thanks for your response, Margaret, but I'm still confused. The concept of "losing money" indicates for me the intent to "make money?" How are you losing money? If people are riding up with you do they not offer to help offset your gas expenses?

I'm new to this meetup, but none of the groups I've met-up with have charged for their services. The concept of contemplative hiking is near and dear to me, but I don't understand the money-making part of it.

    Thanks for your input.l

Jennifer, if you check out my past hikes you'll see that I never have as many show in the end as RSVP. I'm actually losing money by hosting these hikes

If anyone would like to carpool from Lyons let me know, could meet at the Stone Cup around 8 and go from there.

Ouch, about my $2 fee posting question, now I have another. I know that Meetup charges $12/month for the organizer, but already there are 15 going, many driving themselves, so that's $30. And typically, on most meetups, the passengers generosly pay the driver for gas. If you charge this every time, you're making a profit on this group? Just trying to understand.

    Thanks so much,
    Jennifer

It's not a big deal, but what exactly is the purpose of the $2 fee? Does the park charge this entrance fee?

I would be interested in carpooling. I could meet in Golden off of 93.
