This is the season of giving, which follows the season of gratitude (Thanksgiving) and preceeds the season of new beginnings (New Year and Winter Solstice). On this hike, which will be on the Racoon Trail at Golden Gate State Park, we'll contemplate what nature needs from us and what we could possibly offer it for everything it's given us this year: beautiful scenery, food, vitality and overall wellbeing.
Please look for a reading that will be emailed to you before the hike if you RSVP yes or maybe. This can be something you read before the hike to inspire you. We'll hike for 2 hours and have a short discussion and break in the middle.
The Racoon Trail at Golden Gate State Park has a very scenic start - a view of the continental divide and the forested hills of Rollinsville and Nederland. The trail will be snowpacked and a bit steep in places so you'll need winter traction devices on your shoes like YakTrax. The trail switchbacks down steeply at the beginning, levels out and then climbs back up again, so this is moderate to slightly strenuous for about 1/4 of the hike.
There's a $7 per car daily use fee at the park. Please carpool, as there are only about a dozen parking spots at Panorama Point, where the Racoon Trail begins. A good spot to meet to carpool is the park n' ride at the southeast corner of Highway 93 and 72 (which is the road up to Golden Gate State Park).
Afterward those who want to meet up and socialize can meet for lunch at the Old Capitol Grill at 1122 Washington Ave, Golden.
MEETING PLACE: We will meet at the Panorama Point parking lot, which is where the Racoon Trail begins.
DIRECTIONS: Take Highway 93 from Golden or Boulder, turn west on Turn left at Twin Spruce Road. Look for the sign for Golden Gate State Park on your right. Park and pay at the self-service station.
Proceed past the entrance sign for Golden Gate State Park. Park in the Panorama Point parking lot. Look for the Racoon Trail signposts. See this link for more directions: http://parks.state.co.us/Parks/GoldenGateCanyon/MapsandDirections/Pages/GoldenGateMapsDirections.aspx
PARKING: There are about 10-12 spaces at the Panorama Point parking lot.
TRAIL & TERRAIN: Snowpacked, mostly in the trees with some fantastic views, downhill then back uphill. Slightly strenuous for about 30 mintues. 2 hour hike total at a moderate pace.
DONATION: I'm asking for a $1 suggested donation to offset the cost of MeetUp organizer fees and gas.
WEATHER and CANCELLATION POLICY: Please check this website for last minute cancellations and messages. Bring winter traction for your shoes and dress warm!
NOTE: As always, if you're interested in a discounted copy of my book, "Contemplative Hiking Along the Colorado Front Range" I will bring some copies. The book is available on Amazon and at the Boulder Bookstore, and Barnes & Noble. MeetUp member exclusive price is $15 and I'll sign your book. See www.ContemplativeHiking.com for more info.
