Attention comrades and good citizens of ____, do you like your contemporary art served up with healthy doses of political activism?!? Do you further like you art to be fun and boisterous?!? Then Bob and Roberta Smith is your man! (btw, Bob and Roberta Smith is a psudonym for one person - Patrick Brill)
My favourite exhibition in London at the moment is his show 'The Art Party USA comes to the UK', on show at Hales Gallery in Shoreditch until 17th Nov http://www.halesgallery.com/exhibitions/_49/
In the exhibition he protests government spending cuts and austerity, particularly cuts to the arts, and rather makes fun of reigning Secretary of State of Education Michael Gove. There is also a tribute to Amy Winehouse, and a rumination on baldness.
Here is a recent video of him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zasYUTXgG1Y
ON THURSDAY EVENING (Nov 1) there are a few special events happening in the gallery in conjunction with the exhibtion, the line-up as follows:
7.00pm - Shooting Pablo by Tim Newton [Performance] (15 minutes)
7.30pm - Trimming Pablo by Tim Newton [Film screening] (19 minutes)
8pm - Letter to Michael Gove [Performance] by Bob and Roberta Smith
This is the gallery's description of these events:
'"The Letter to Michael Gove" was written in 2011 is a formative moment for the Art Party founded by Bob and Roberta Smith. Artists, teachers and concerned individuals have written their own letters to Michael Gove inspired by this letter. On November 1st Bob and Roberta Smith will perform the letter live.
"Trimming Pablo" is a fictional short inspired by a true story from a little-known day in Cold War history [Picasso's attendance at the the World Peace Congress in Sheffield in 1950]. Written and directed by Tim Newton, the film is about the personal price of war, the politics of peace; and the power of art to overcome it all. It is an intense, intimate drama that still resonates today.'
So if you come on thursday night you'll be able to see the exhibition AND the events, and it's all absolutely FREE!
I'll be there from around 6.45, do join me, the more the merrier! I'll be wearing a tartan flat cap, a blue bag and a black waterproof coat... If you still can't find me my number is[masked]
