UX designers and content strategists often work closely when designing products and experiences, and we've wanted to host an event that explored the relationship between these two disciplines for several years. Good news: It's finally happening.

We've lined up a panel of three UX designers to hear about how the two disciplines work together at agencies and tech companies. The panelists include Suelyn Yu, a senior UX designer at OPower and former interaction designer at Frog; Sanjay Shamdasani, principal UX Strategist at SpringStudio (Teri Durkin had to cancel); and Jim Granger, Creative Director of Mobile UX and Design at Intel, and one of my past (and all-time favorite) collaborators.

The format for this event—which is generously hosted by OPower—will be a panel conversation. Frank Marquardt, co-founder of the SF Bay Area Content Strategy Meetup and a content strategist at Facebook, will facilitate, and we'll make sure we have time for Q&A.

I appreciated the spirit of this talk, but it felt awkward to me to have people who knew a little bit about the basics of CS talk about it to a room full of content strategists. The audience questions were the best part, I think. There were some bright moments, but overall I mostly felt like the deeper principles of what content strategy is were missed or misunderstood.

Thanks for the feedback, Tricia. It sounds like I could have done a better job framing the event; the objective was to explore the working relationship between content strategist and design in agency and product companies. The goal was not to explore the deeper principles of what content strategy is—we've done that in a lot of our events—but look at the collaboration with UX designers, which isn't talked about as much but critically important to a content strategy's (and content strategist's) success in many work environments.

Being a UX designer, I would have appreciated hearing from the Content Strategy side -- but since this is the CS group I guess I should have expected that the panel would be the UX perspective. I came into the web world from publications and one thing I miss is the interaction between writers/editiors and art directors/designers. It was a team effort to communicate a story in both content and form. Sanjay's approach of creating a "story" to engage users and support the brand, product or site goals (when appropriate) is something I feel an affinity with. Stories are usually told by writers, so they are a crucial part of this process, even if the story is not told explicitly but is an underlying touchstone that defines tone or attitude. Getting the right CS into the mix early on can only make the process more cohesive.

My interest is finding ways to add Content Strategists to a project -- I'd like to hear their stories of working on projects. Thanks for the event!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
