Hike at Meacham Grove Forest Preserve

Need to change the date for this hike to March 15th at 10:00am.

Visitors at the 256-acre Meacham Grove Forest Preserve in Bloomingdale will find woodland groves, meadows, a fishing lake, wetlands and the meandering Spring Brook Creek. The extensive groves of stately oaks and maples are home to a host of spring wildflowers, including some endangered species. The wetlands support a variety of wildlife from great egrets to western chorus frogs.

Trails
Hikers, bicyclists and cross-country skiers can explore 2.5 miles of limestone trails, which loop around the lake and through the adjacent wetlands. This stretch provides an excellent opportunity to observe great egrets, great blue herons, a variety of swallows, and other native wildlife, including beavers and dragonflies.
The trail continues west through wetland and woodland before crossing Bloomingdale- Roselle Road via a pedestrian bridge. Here on the west side of Meacham Grove, a 0.5-mile looped path, which is designated solely for foot traffic, features spectacular spring displays of native trillium.

We will meet in the parking lot which is off of Circle Avenue. We will start out on our hike at 10am. Please allow enough time to arrive to the parking lot by 10am.

We will be hiking the Maple Lake trails which is 1.3 miles, then connect to hike a short distance on the Regional trail for a total of 1.2 miles. We will then continue onto the Meachum Grove trail for a distance of 0.5 miles.

Total distance on hike: 3 miles
Difficulty of Trail: Easy because we will be hiking on limestone trails.

Please dress for the winter weather because the hike will be held even if it is snowing.

Aside from slipping/sliding on the remaining ice, I had a great time hiking and meeting new/old Trailblazer members. I usually hike this preserve in spring and fall...and have totally missed areas we traversed today. Thanks, Lynn!

Carrot, thanks for the encouragement. I don't want anyone to feel they have to lag behind because of me. See you all on Saturday.

My hubs and I have been hibernating all winter too, so Janet you may have company. We can do the 4 miles just don't know about the pace? It's suppose to be in the 50's perfect day to get out!

Well, Sue, I was a member of a hiking group that walked Tuesdays and Thursdays and I did most of those walks from late August till early November. Except for a 1-time afternoon at the Brookfield Zoo in mid January, I have been hibernating because I have had sinus, migraine, and coughing problems all winter. So except for 2 days ago when I was out walking pushing my granddaughter in her stroller for about an hour, I have basically been hibernating on my couch. And this was the winter I said I would embrace and enjoy. Obviously I got Mother Nature's answer, up yours!
Hopefully we will be a match. If not, I have a phone and can still go at my own pace. Look forward to meeting you and everyone on Saturday!

Janet, I don't know how fast i am after hibernating this winter!

Lynn, I absolutely understand. Any animal friends should be an addition to the enjoyment - not a distraction from it. Will see everyone on Saturday.

Also looking forward to some fresh air - hope it's sunny. Depending on the weather I might bring my dog as well.

Dogs are always welcome as long as they are on leashes and they get along with other dogs. We have previously had a trail blazer come with a large dog who made it clear it did not like any of the other dogs. I had to ask the trail blazer to leave since it would be dangerous to leave the dog in the car during the winter cold.

I want to do this on Saturday, but is anyone going who is just starting out and not super fast? Last time I had a friend who wasn't fast either because no way could we have kept up with the group. Hope I am making sense! Thanks!

So looking forward to an OUTDOOR walk!!!! With the thaw (hopefully), asphalt will be much easier to walk on that mulch. See you Saturday.
