Meet Here Mornings: Topic - A Geek Sifts Through Bullsh*t

Cospace (map)

Selected By: Andrew Bushnell

About the Topic, from Jason:

So many business philosophies profess they're the One True Way, yet different business face different hurdles. After starting three companies, I've found that some widely accepted advice lead to failure while trusting my (inexperienced) gut lead to success. In this talk-plus-discussion I'll give specific advice about when to follow the rules and when to go your own way.

About the Speaker:

Jason is the founder of Smart Bear Software, maker of Code Collaborator, the world's most popular tool for peer code review and winner of the Jolt Award. He took Smart Bear from start to multiple millions in revenue and 50% profit margin without debt or VC, then sold it for cash.

Jason is also a founding member of ITWatchdogs, another bootstrapped startup which became profitable and was sold. He's also a mentor at Capital Factory (like TechStars or Y-Combinator in Austin) and the co-host of OnStartups Answers along with Dharmesh Shah.

About Cospace:

Cospace is the intersection of people, space and resources. Cospace promotes coworking, but looks to go beyond it. One of the ways we will do so is by providing resources that support entrepreneurship and small business growth in Austin.

‘Meet Here Mornings’ is an event series designed to connect entrepreneurs and small business owners with the industry experts and resources that they need to grow their business or turn their idea into reality. The series is designed by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs. This event will consist of a networking session, a hands on learning session and an opportunity to kick off a productive day with some free coworking time at Cospace.

The schedule for this event will be as follows:

9:00 - 9:30 - Networking
9:30 - 10:00 - Guest Speaker: Jason Cohen
10:00 - 12:00 - Guests are encouraged to continue their networking conversations and stick around Cospace to try out 2 free hours of coworking in our community space.

Cospace will be hosting ‘Meet Here Mornings” in our Boardroom. In order to maintain a collaborative and networking-friendly environment, the events will be limited to 20 people. This is a free event. You do not have to be a Cospace member to attend.

Bring something to write on, plenty of business cards and your laptop or work supplies if you plan on coworking after the networking and speaker sessions. Coffee and water will be provided. If you'd like to bring a snack, nobody will stop you :)

Even with his brilliance and excellent startup track record, Jason Cohen makes you feel comfortable as he patiently answers your questions. Jason's honesty is refreshing in this world of formulas and gimmicks, as also seen in his blog: blog.asmartbear.com. I know his new venture wpengine.com will be successful.

Jason has done an excellent job of contemplating the factors in his successful ventures and distilled them into a presentation that should be seen by more people in the tech industry. I came away with new perspectives on startup strategies that I will use and share with others.

Good presentation, topic and points relevant to my work, prepared, passionate w/o being a zealot, enjoyed it a lot.
