Workshop for basic sewing and costume construction

  • June 29, 2013 · 10:30 AM

I'd like to host a sewing workshop if anyone is interested in learning more tricks of the trade, as well as basic sewing tips and how to make your own costume. I would like to start out with a basic sewing 101 and move up to more advanced cosplay techniques like resin casting, jewlrey + mold making, and prop construction. Let me know if thats something people would like to do!

** OK, I've asked Andaiye to see if the library downtown still has a room available. ** I've sent an email to check with Mike ** Library downtown - Central Library located at One Margaret Mitchell Sq in Atlanta. We're on teh corner of Carnegie Way and Forsyth Street, across from teh peachtree Center MARTA station. The venue is free, parking is not and I'd need a quick, definitive number of the total attending and what all you will bring in addition to sewing machines, fabric, etc. before I can confirm.

***Would you be so kind as to respond at your earliest convenience? ***

What will you be bringing? You can say:
    Sewing Machine
    Large Project
    Small Project/Fabric
    Project Book/Swatches

I take it that next Saturday is off? Anybody have a location? I am in WR and planned to drive down so I dont have ready access to any local places we could meet. I was really hoping this would happen especially since Dragoncon is around the corner and I wanted to learn some tips to add personal touches to my costume.

    Anybody wanna volunteer a place?

OK- well, keep the library in mind, there's 34 brnaches spread out as far as Roswell and Fairburn.

I am new to the area so I can't help with suggesting a location, but I have some experience teaching intro to sewing at a college level and could help people with their projects if that is needed. I could bring a few power strips too.

Yes I love to learn this!!!!

I do singing telegrams for a living so I have lots of costumes, but I've never had to sew one for myself. I've always gotten someone else to do it for me. I figure it's time I learned.

Love to come, asy luck on a location? I'd offer my house but Winder is not central and I don't have this many power outlets anyway.

Please excuse my typing skills, or lack thereof, I was rushing when I typed the above message!

Sounds great! I rock at prop making (and would be happy to share those skills) but my sewing could do for a serious upgrade. Also, if anybody is interested, there is actually a first year convention called Goo-con that is all about learning this sort of stuff too. It's coming up on July 13th-14th, I think. Their website is over here: (Forgive me if that sounds like a plug for them >.< But I'm excited.)

The 29th sounds good. I live about an hour north of Atlanta so meeting closer to lunch time would be better for me. Do you have a location?

Maybe someone needs to suggest a date and time and lets go from there!

My two cents :) saturday is preferable but ill work with whatever the majority prefers! How about June 29th or if we need it further out July 20th....tag someone else's turn.

You got my attention!! I'm self taught in everything I do, which means I don't really have a clue in what I'm doing!! I've made a few costumes before that get by and look alright on the outside, but my sewing on the inside is really terrible. I'd love to get involved with this and meet some like minded people where we could all learn and create together. :)

As for a location if I had my own place I would offer, but if anyone is interested, the studio that my boyfriend is interning at has a good sized dance studio that we could rent for 35 and hour. If everyone pitched in, it'd really be dirt cheap! It is a dance studio though so we would have to bring our own little table set ups or something haha. Let me know what you think!

I'd like to learn the basics, since I'd rather not spend a fortune on a costume that someone else made.

Please let me know if you decide to do this. I'd love to go!
