The Science of Smell

  • Feb 16, 2014 · 3:30 PM

What smells? And will a rose by any other name smell as sweet?

These questions will be addressed in a self-exploratory session led by Matt Harbowy, scientist, hacker, and essential oils chemist. You will learn about your sense of smell, and discover ways your sense of smell hacks your perception of taste. You will discover the difference between peely and fruity, and why synthetic lemon is such a difficult flavor to master. You will participate in the distillation of essential oils, and take home a small vial of your own DIY perfume.

You are encouraged to bring a smartphone or tablet computer to the presentation so that you can collect data in our online lab notebook and share your results with the whole class- and will be provided online tools to continue the discovery at home. Technology is not needed to enjoy the class- bring your curiosity.

This class is planned for February 16th, 2013 and is part 3 of a 6 part lecture and lab on the senses.
